Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

Continuing the exploration of things different.

I look this up in Robinson et al. 'Wine Grapes'. Hmmm - no direct listing, so look in the index for a synonym. Ah-ha: Isabella.

'Once widely planted, old American variety now found mostly in Brazil and India.' is the summary. Whoa!

Apparently, it tolerates tropical and semi-tropical conditions.

A read shows a complicated - and somewhat disputed - origin and parentage (not uncommon in wine grape varieties). It is widely grown in Brazil (as Isabel), Moldova and Ukraine. In India it is used mainly for juice.

My first question is: Is it really Isabella/Isabel/Fragola? Robinson says the 'wines are pale, more like a rose...'

Anyway, whatever, it was pleasant enough. Moderately fragrant on the nose, texturally quite rich and smooth, but fairly short on the palate.

I had it with some roast chicken, which was fine but I reckon it's a lunch charcuterie and cheese plate job.

Bottom line: inoffensive, interesting enough and worth a try at $27 IMHO.

I find screwcap in some cases almost doubles drinking windows.

to quality wine it benefits the most, I had a 6-7year old red that is from a known winery hidden in one of my cabinet, when I pour into the glass it’s just brownish and smells really bad. they winery did say it is a ready to drink wine when I bought it ,so it really depends on the quality of the fruit.

Two interesting wines tonight.

Soumah Hexham 2016: Very enjoyable with a strong earthy/brambly component. However, this wine also has something I have experienced a few times before; a real tangy saline character almost like a slight fermentation has occurred in the bottle.

Warner 'The Rest' shiraz. From the growers that supply Giaconda and Jamsheed (Supposedly same winemaker as Jamsheed too): Would never has picked this as a Shiraz. Firmly in the bright crunchy red fruit spectrum. Almost grenache like. Would be interested to hear if this is typical of Beechworth Shiraz?

looking at the winemaker note, this is 50% whole bunch, so it might be a whole bunch character you've tasted, most grenache i've had are made whole bunch.

Something a little different tonight that I received for a milestone birthday from a friend. If you believe @JohnM it would be my 21st ;)

And you're saying that it isn't? o_O:eek::p

I should mention that with relaxing of restrictions in WA to Stage 3 next Saturday, the wine group that the Milestone Birthday Boy and I belong to is having its first face-to-face tasting since March on 17 June. Happy days return. :D

Theme - appropriately - Champagne. 😋🥳
