Night two in Salta and back to steak off the parilla and Malbec.

In the never-ending search for the unconventional and something a bit different, I chose this.

Could this be the highest vineyard in the world? I hope to find out when I move on to Cafayete on Tuesday.

Despite the high ABV, absolutely no heat - in fact, almost the opposite. And certainly not tannic. Kind of juicy.

A very enjoyable wine. However, the Cadus from two nights ago appealed slightly more. That was also from higher-altitude vineyards (about 1100-1400m IIRC). It had the sleeker velvet texture of classic good Argy Malbec.

This one was 1800ARP (c. $60) in a restaurant; the Cadus was 1900ARP. And that’s about the difference in appeal. Both just nuts value!

Now is a very good time to visit Argentina!

I hasten to add that the search for the unconventional and different definitely does not extend to ‘orange wines’, ‘egg wines’ , vin jaune etc. Once bitten by trendism to faulty wines sold as something special, as @Daver6 would say, is more than enough .

Twas a funny thing in the mid 2010's where plenty of accolades were thrown at the 2010 south Australian vintage. I found many 2009 variants to be superior to their one year old counterparts.

When I was at Langtons last year a Barossa Winemaker said exactly the same thing. Apparently many winemakers 'overdid' the '10 (I think he was referring to fruit and oak) and that may people ignored the very good '09s in anticipation of the '10.

Today, still Wednesday in Argentina, is World Malbec Day (Malbec World Day - Wikipedia).

I know that @Daver6 was at our Malbec-theme tasting last night.

Last night was my first night in Cafayate, which is the main area for wine production in the Salta region, so I got into the spirit of the day. This Colome Autentico Malbec was a cracker. Don’t be fooled by the age. The greatest characteristic of good Argy Malbec, particularly from the higher altitude vineyards, is that the tannins are so soft and velvety from the start. Aging is not needed to soften them.

Colome Torrontes tonight. Muy bueno!

An excellent wine. Not too fruity like the simpler Torrontes can usually be, but also not too austere. Nice balance and a good food wine. Colome is one of the major producers here.

As a Rockford fan I guess this is predictable, but I love this blend and while it has lots of life left it’s drinking very well now. 12 months since my last one of these but only one of them left so will hold it until ~April 2020

The 2009 Meschach...I have to agree with you wholeheartedly, this for me was better that great, it was stunning. I had this as my best of the wines of 2016, a top six list I have made for decades. Such a balanced wine which sits around for 5 years before being sold and 2 of those years in oak. Burge makes three biggies and i have only ever had this one. I have another somewhere and i really hope that it tasted s good as it did previously. We all know sometimes that just doesnt happen but I will be anxiously waiting probably in another three to five years.

Just to add to Steadys enjoyment of a Voyager. I picked up only a couple of weeks ago three six packs of white from graysonline. One was very average, one was good and the Voyager Estate 2015 Savvy Semy blend was ridiculouly good. Just so damn smooth, so moorish with nice complexity. To add to that, I paid about eight bucks delivered. Better than a 'fo deal.

Thanks for your comments on the 2009 Meschach. I had one a couple of years ago and thought it had turned. I had another one and it was brilliant. I will now sentence my remaining two to '3 to 5 with good behaviour'!

I also have one 2010 Meschach. Should I subject myself to the same level of patience?

I would have them both on the same night in that next 3-4 years what screwcaps definately slowing the aging down.

Posted elsewhere but let’s do it aagain - ANZAC Day such an important day in our calendar and thanks to our HEROES from generations gone by we are lucky enough celebrate this day in any fashion we choose.

I chose to surround myself with imm family members and a flock of Champs botts:

Then after the game we lost by 4pts - we were robbed by the way - (can someone pls call Steve Hocking and tell him Tippy does have a neck and shoulders) - I told niece #15 to go down to cellar and grab any 2 botts red that take her fancy and we will head to local pizza/pasta establishment:

So give me your thoughts - one of these wines slaughtered the other - pls tell me which one?

And just to add a bit of spice to AFF - penegal has offered to donate a bottle of Grange to the first person who can identify the person wearing the GRUMPY T-shirt in the background!

Some recent losses from the cellar.

Always enjoyed Hunter shiraz and the Rosehill is highly recommended. Thought the Best rivals Mt Langi Ghiran, simply superb - volume, structure, length and balance. Salivating just writing about it! Not sure if the NZ Beernenauslese mirrors the German stuff - quite nice but not sure it's a 99 pointer (BC).161360

First Arras I've tried, crisp and enjoyable but a little like sucking on a lime. The Wynns was terrific, my last of the Bowen and the Devils lair was typical MR Cabernet - faultless although perhaps not classic. Pannell offered a nice change of pace and the Tapanappa presents a very good wine - I'd compare it to Blue Poles Allouran.
