Zaltos 🤪 We do like the Veritas line though - careful if it shatters as it explodes like crazy.

I don't like the hard angular shape at the bottom of the Zalto champagne. I find it leads to the last bit getting warm very quickly. Also the shape of the Zaltos doesn't lend itself as well to swirling the wine.

Having said that, Zalto universals are excellent for champagne tasting but less so for just enjoying a few glasses. Reason being as I find they let the mousse dissipate a little too easily.

Trying a new champagne and I like it! 70% PN and 30% Chardonnay. Also trying out the new Riedel Veritas champagne glasses. I love this. The perfect mid-point between a flute and tulip style glass.

When champagne is not the only wine of the night (which is usually the case for us) I tend to use universal, mostly for practical reasons.

Do you find Veritas superior to various universal glasses?

Edit: Sorry, didn’t notice you’ve discussed that with @billbro

Zaltos still feel much lighter and nicer in the hand. I also picked up some Veritas oaked Chardonnay glasses as I didn't have any stemware in that shape. I haven't given them a road test yet (and will also compare them to my Zalto Burgundy glasses). In the past in restaurants I've had that shape glass with white Burgundy and always thought the wines showed well, hence was keen to get some. I also think they could be good for Barolo. My go to Barolo glasses are the Riedel sommelier Burgundy. I'll need to drink lots...just for science of course :)

Albe is a tribute to the masters of the 1950s and 60s, to those winemakers who had the vision and the taste to blend some of the most amazing crus in order to achieve a Barolo of balance and charm.

The high-elevation vineyards for Barolo Albe have an exposure ranging from south-south-east to south-west. The grapes are usually picked in the second half of the Nebbiolo harvest. Vinification is made in custom-designed vertical vats, with gentle punch down and pumpovers. Maceration lasts 25 days on average. Malolactic conversion occurs in stainless steel the following spring. Albe rests on average between 30 and 36 months in large (40, 50 and 75hL) Slavonian oak casks. The wine is usually racked once a year. Blending is decided in the spring prior to bottling.

Giuseppe Vaira

Red cherry, raspberry, roses, almond biscotti, mint and exotic spices. It’s mediumbodied, fresh and bright in red fruit flavour, but with a savoury tobacco and dried herb edge. Tannin is firm, with a fine chalk dust texture, and clean acidity drives it along so nicely. Finish is firm and long, with a pretty perfume as it goes. Charming, yet serious. It’s a really good release.”

Have you looked at the Gabriel's, wafer light, just don't hold stem while drying them, the Gold is the very light and the standard is more durable.

Pol Roger or Krug the winner ?

Two very different beasts. Both still incredibly young and needed time to open up and warm up too. Consensus was the Pol Roger showed the better on the day. Coming back to the Krug after a couple of hours it was quite similar to white Burgundy, which isn't all the surprising.

Lunch yesterday for a friend's (belated) milestone birthday. Let's just say he really spoilt us! The intention was to all be Piedmont earlier this year to celebrate, but Covid had other ideas.

That's a tough one. Realistically they were all pretty special. I thoroughly enjoyed the Bouchard Corton Charlemagne, but the DRC was pretty special. The cork gods were kind to us.

There were 9 of us for lunch (which went till early dinner). We didn't finish the Grappa or Madeira.

I'll be chowing down with my elder son for lunch at Shadow Wine Bar (Shadow Wine Bar & Dining Room Perth) today.

Just doing a little advance scoping of the online wine list.

Interesting little addendum:

🤔

They're just pre-emptying folks seeing the bottle and then questioning it. MrsDaver6 and I had dinner at Friends last year. They were pouring this by the glass as part of the matched wines for the degustation. Also was the QF version.

$450 at a restaurant is actually an ok price. The mark-up on the 2013 Pol is ridiculous at more then 3x what you can pick it up for. And you can be sure Shadow isn't paying the price you and I pay at Dans!

A go-to would be the Franck Bonnville, but we slurp a fair bit of that ;), and $160 is getting a bit exxy. (I recall when it was c. $100-110 at Petition Winebar).

Just for something different, have you tried the Idee Fixe? Vasse Felix are turning the old Watershed winery into a sparkling specialty.

I tried it once last summer, and it was good, but lacking power, I recall. If SJM hasn't tried it, I may suggest another crack with oysters.

Anything on the whites & reds that hits you? Do NOT mention Jura. 😝🤬

😛
