Nice wines I have drunk recently - Red or White

I know many of you travel in style for work and get the Krug 04 treatment. Alas, not me. But, unlike the Ferngrove I had on my recent trip to MEL, this wasn't that bad:

"So, I'm on the QF 462 from MEL to SYD tonight. The (lovely) hosties are old, the entertainment doesn't work, the magazine's pages are old and welded together. But the wine is too young! Or is it? Dark blackberry in colour. No real nose to speak of. But a very approachable, drink now Aussie Cab Sauv, with a smooth and rounded but short lived palate of blackberries, plums, mint and a spec of spice. No idea where the oak is, but very drinkable. A Wozza 90/100 (3.2/5.0) from me."

Maybe one day. Just one day, I'll get to travel like most of you good people ...

You should venture out of the wine area and you may find some good things on AFF....

Are you in SYD or MEL tonight?

I'm suffering through more of that Hunter Valley Shiraz in your backyard. It's just horrible.

Hunter Shiraz can be pretty special, but the ordinary stuff is pretty ordinary, I agree.

I'm back in SYD in the taxi home, before jumping on a 24 HR flight on Singapore Airlines to Blighty. Dreading it!

Youre right. I should venture to the other parts of AFF.

This one is quite nice, so my comment was sarcastic, but the internet isn't so good at translating such things.

Enjoy your trip. Someone needs to sit in economy to balance the plane... :)

The best hunter reds you will probably find down at the local pub enjoying a few schooners. All in breeds, all named bluey.

It has been decades since I have drank a hunter shiraz. McWilliams Philips sounds remotely familiar.

And you also should also get yourself a new taxi driver. 24 hr flight hey Woz? Enjoying all that Krug and Cristal washed down with a little Cullen. This Blighty is a little closer to your house.
Blighty, NSW is located here.
Blighty (Conargo) is located in the Murray Region region, New South Wales (NSW) in Australia. The satellite coordinates of Blighty are: latitude 35°35'31"S and longitude 145°17'13"E

I reckon you have the wife conned with a boys trip, a little fishin' , a lot of drinkin'. In the poorhouse after the circumspect sommeliers effort with the Mitolo. M and A activity Wozza. Sure !

Merlot and Armagnac more likely. Enjoy nevertheless !!

Haha, classic.

Agree somewhat, but there are one or two gems out there.

Could someone explain to me what Cristal is all about. Where do you buy it , I have never seen it!

thanks penegal where do I buy it? And is it $$

Limited availability / importers / resellers

And yes it is pricy... Hence being a "special one"

FWIW, I've had it a few times. Never paid myself thankfully.

See you Aus. We'll be back next month. Here we come Europe.

Not sure if I can post all the fabulous Old World wines I will hopefully sample. So here goes my last Aussie one for a while as SQ 242 taxis away:

"$9.90 is RIDICULOUS for this estate grown Barossa GSM! It's serious guilt trip (bargain basement) territory. As it delivers a Southern Rhone-esk quality style of wine. Halliday gave this 2010 vintage a 95 saying it was 'an opulent little number with lots of dark fruits and spice with a touch of earthy savouriness'.

And so it proved. As deep plums, blackberries, mulberries, a touch of cherry liqueur and fine tar, fennel, rosemary and spice balance on the nose and medium-bodied palate, leaving a fine savoury, lingering finish. It's the balance and drive that really underscore this wine, leaving a much more premium feeling than the price paid. Consequently, a Wozza 95/100 (4.2/5.0) from me.

It's been almost a year, AFF. Fitting that it's a mof_ wine to sign off on (it was the thread that brought me here). Cheers for now ..

Well with Italy featuring prominently recently it was time to head to our favourite Italian restaurant in Maroochydore-Cala Luna. The chef is from Sardinia so the wine was naturally Sardinian-

.

Really well balanced easy drinking wine.
I also had one of the best known Sardinian dishes-Malloruddus Alla Campidanese-

.

With a little extra chilli.Molto bene.

Rockford 2006 Basket Press Shiraz. Rummaged in the cellar and decided to push the boat out for something to go with the spaghetti bolognese this evening :)
