Nice things people do on flights

These are all very nice things to do, please don't get me wrong.

When did society become so screwed up that these kind of actions, particularly in the confined space of an aircraft, were considered optional?

I'm not sure WHEN this happened. I am sure we have ALL flown enough to realise that they have though.

It's a little like road rage.... A perfectly polite and rational person can change behind the wheel. A perfectly polite and rational person can often become rude and irrational when boarding an aircraft.

True - I caught myself once getting a bit rude with one of the explosives testers when I was in a hurry (I seem to be chosen very reularly - I must look a bit dodgy).

I apologised, but I actually suprised myself at my lack of manners.

As to NYCguy taking care of a child:shock::D, what next, flying Y.

Children are lovely, in small doses, and when I can hand them back once I tire of them.

Flying Y - not bloody likely. About as likely as seeing me pushing a twin-stroller up Avenue Montaigne.

Many years ago, on one of my very first trips in J, I woke up from a nap on a SYD-SFO flight with a splitting headache and no Panadols in my carry on. Feeling pretty groggy I flagged down a passing flight attendant and asked her for some Tylenol, which she said she'd get for me.

Much to my surprise the lady then sat down in her J seat in the row in front of me, where she'd been sitting as a regular passenger for the previous 8 or so hours, before popping her head around the seat and passing back her bottle of Tylenol for me. Needless to say she wasn't a flight attendant at all - just a very kind passenger who didn't even blink an eyelid when a complete stranger asked her for a favour.

At least you might have been able to claim you were delirious and didn’t know who she was ;)

On my first trip overseas, 30 years ago, I was 19 and flying from London to Los Angeles. Sitting next to me was a nice American guy who had been in the Middle East working for 6 months.

We got chatting talking about my first overseas trip and what I would be doing and seeing in LA. I said I was staying at UCLA Orange County campus (US summer holidays). After stating that I would be taking a taxi to my accommodation he was appalled as it was an hours drive away, the plane landed at 10.45pm. He said that his wife and father-in-law would be picking him up at the airport so they would give me a lift to the campus.

Anyway after landing he waited for me to clear customs and we walked out of arrivals and was met by his wife, who was about 9 months pregnant - I did not know this. She must have got a big shock to see her absent husband walking out with a young girl stating that they would be driving me out of their way (I did not know at this stage it was out of their way - only found this out later) at nearly midnight after not seeing him for 6 months and she very pregnant.

I felt quite uncomfortable but he was insistant that they drop me off - that was a long trip! They gave me their contact details in LA and told me to ring them if I needed anything or wanted them to show me around. I did not contact them until I got back to Oz but did send them a nice gift- I felt they needed catch up time.

I have one - and a recent one

A couple, obviously rushed for the plane, a dozen things to do etc forgot to take any currency on the plane

It was a very early flight

and air asia does not take credit cards!

this was on a long flight Gold Coast to Kuala Lumpur

after listening to them stressing another couple gave them some money, enough to buy food etc

and gave them the extra water bottles etc from their own meals

They looked a tad surprised

Well I give the F/A's/CSM a box of chocolates EVERY time I board an aircraft.

I've read where you have mentioned giving the chocolates previously and thought what a nice thing to do. Do you buy a special brand of choc's over cadbury, etc.? Do the crew appear to accept it in spirit of gift?

It sounds as though you give it on domestic as well as int'l, is that right?

I've wanted to give something to crew but never sure what?
cheers,
trish

Hi Trish.

Yes I do it on ALL flights, domestic and international. I like to show my appreciation of the cabin crew. I have seen many many fellow pax over the years treat the crew in a manner I am sure they would not like to be treated themselves. My small gesture has been my way of thanks. Yes the crew accept it ib the spirit it is given.

I don't go for a specific brand of chocolates. I ensure that they are good quality and I guess I prefer Lindt if I can get it.

Years ago on a QF flight to NRT in Economy my wife and I were seated in the middle 4 seats next to 2 youngish Japanese ladies. In those days inflight entertainment was just one or two movies on the small screen at the far end of your section so these ladies spent their time making origami animals (and other things) out of the napkins and other pieces of paper they found. We were admiring them for some time during the flight. Before we landed they made two flamingos for my wife and I to keep. They were fantastic.

Daughter and I were travelling together. We were not given seats together. We were told at the gate that a gentleman had given up his seat so that daughter and I could sit together. On the plane, I looked over to my old seat number to thank the person. It was Shannon Bennett, Vue de Monde. Most impressed and now I know why I like his restaurant and bistro.

The very nice couple on a LHR-SYD flight many years ago who purchased the QF teddy for my young son after they overheard me tell him I couldn't afford to buy it.
They also did it very nicely - "thought we would get you this for being so well behaved on the flight"

Only just found this thread.

How classy is that.
