If you like flying 747's then you need to read this book.
747: Creating the World's First Jumbo Jet and Other Adventures from a Life in Aviation (Hardcover)
by Joe Sutter

I read this recently. Very nice book by the guy who
designed and headed up the 747 team.

As he puts it very nicely, when they were designing
the 747 the next largest plane only seated about
150 people, had one aisle and sat four across, so
the 747 was revolutionary but the A380 is really just
incremental.

There are some nice insights, like how Pan-Am
really wanted a complete double decker plane
(like the A380) and how they designed the plane
to fly, but Prat-Whitney couldn't deliver the engines
to power it!

I too have read this book and found it interesting. It was an impressive design achievement but he does have some coloured vision regarding how he sees other planes eg. the Lockheed C5, designed when? The Airbus A380 is not just an upscaled version it is a design marvel in itself, Boeing could not get the wieght down enough for a complete double decker, but they also realised there is an issue of cargo hold space for the passengers' bags....
Of course what the guys achieved, and in the space of tiem, with draft tables and slide rules was amazing, no issue about what version software each design team was using:p

Given the fact that you are from Wellington, and any time I think of WLG I think of welly boots, and obviously you have a passion for flying, so how about a flying boot such as:

or

or

NM, Well the red flying boat does take my fancy or the winged boot.
Can I reserve both until I get to 500?
Oh serfty if you had the 500 real(?) Khmer note I would consider that as well considering it was due to Cambodia that got me to move from SYD to WLG in the first place and the need:rolleyes: to do all those trans-Tasman flights that wanted me to maximise my QF FFP that made me look to AFF as well.
