Word going around that all QF operations may head to T3 shortly.

Really??? I know they are having a shortage of gates over at T2, but only virgin is having that problem. I don't see Qantas giving up gates for them to use.

Hmmm... QP consolidation. Oh this is going to be not sweet.

Not to mention lack of gates for the turbo props unless they keep them at T2 but shuttle them from T3. That'd be an expensive exercise. Or, I wonder if there is space for expansion next to the SYD/CBR gates (16 and 17).

Gate 15 is already a shuttle gate.

I've heard this rumour around too for about a year. Makes sense as they've been pulling the Q400 flights up to 16/17 for a while now so frees up 15 (shuttle) for regional.

Fantastic move in my opinion. Can use the J lounge when flying regional. Imagine T2 lounge could be a Jetstar lounge.

Jetstar needs those regional gates too on the T2 pier. Let DJ and TT scrap it out over the rest of the budget terminal ;)

As long as they keep those rowdy jetstar passengers away from T3 it dosen't bother me!!

Not sure how farmiliar everybody is with Gold Coast, but at work we call T2 SYD Pacific Fair's Food Court with Boarding Gates....:p

I fly through PHE fortnightly and KTA quarterly. The Q card reader in KTA speeds up the process only slightly, as most people check in online. It is baggage drop at both airports that is the slow process. Q tag enabled bag drop service would be fantastic.

Quick Q - I'm a NGCI newbie, I haven't checked in anywhere with it yet, but I see that my home port (WGA) is having a Q Card Reader available at the end of this week, and a Q Bag Tag facility available mid 2011.

If I have checked luggage, is there any advantage in using the Q card reader?
I presume you still have line up to bag drop anyway, which doesn't seem to be any quicker if I've checked in already or not.
 
Another rumour going around is that MEL may be home to a new Terminal - Terminal 5!

This would be the base for JQ and freeing up T1 for all of QF's operations.

T5 would be located where AAE used to be (next to T1)..

Not dramatically - although you should be able to use your card as your boarding pass - I find this handy.
 
I don't see great advantages to rolling out NGCI in smaller regional ports, like ABX, ROK and CFS, except purely for familiarity / consistency. Even NZ didn't roll out its new self check-in on all ports (only AKL, WLG and CHC; it should be noted that NZ's self check-in uses standard paper tags).


The problem with putting NGCI in say KTA to speed up check-in is that they probably won't:
  • Have enough injectors to process people faster than that if they had standard counters
  • Make injectors fast enough so that people so that, again, it'll be faster than if they had standard counters
Not to mention if whether QF have really considered how durable and resilient they need to make all the controls (especially touch screens) in such a location due to the travelling demographic.

CNS and DRW people must be seeing red (no pun intended). Since when were they supposed to be treated as "regional" areas.



KTA increased its traffic last year by about 100000 PAX 30% so given the upward trend we are looking at the airport go to 17th busiest airport in Australia... with traffic of just under 600,000 PAX with 70% of that to Qantas...

My Question is how would this not make checkin quicker?

Also a Good 10% of the PAX travel just for the day, and these type of people know how to use a touch Screen.
