New York in December - worth the inflated pricing?

Not that I could see.

The claim that "most" airbnb is illegal, given only 1 out of the 3 airbnb rental models is illegal in NY, that isn't most. "Some" would be a more accurate description.

Understand Airbnb isnt for everyone, but in a city like NY it works well if you choose the right property, hosts and neighborhood.

For stays greater than a week having access to a laundry inside the apartment is really useful.

The word 'most' was chosen carefully.

Suggest you do some checking.

'In most of New York City, it's now illegal to advertise or rent an entire apartment on a platform like Airbnb ...'.

'Unfortunately, most Airbnb-type rentals are illegal in New York City.'

'The New York State attorney general believes most Airbnb listings in New York are illegal'

Entire apartment is the pertinent bit, but there are just as many listing for "private room" and "shared room" where the owner is present. There has been lots of sensational headlines but these just don't gel with real experience of myself and heaps of friends and colleagues who have had no issues staying with great hosts perfectly legally.

There is a large Superhost community in NY city, they have neighbourhood based meetings regularly to ensure they are compliant with city ordinances and are offering their guests the best stays.

The NY Attorney General says 72% are illegal. But, I don't see the point of keep going on about it further. It's great that you had 2 good experiences. Let's move on.

Entire apartment is the pertinent bit,

Agree. But you didn't note that was just for one of the headlines. The headlines are not as you claim 'sensational' but rather accurate of a very significant problem.

I've selected 4 quotes about the problem. In fact, I selected the first 4 relevant ones. There were many more I could have chosen as examples. These are not isolated quotes. They are easily discoverable and in many instances from reputable sources. There are just too many sources providing clear warnings about the majority of airbnb being illegal in NYC to ignore.

I continue to advise caution. And stand by the statement that most airbnb in NYC is illegal.

Loosing your money and having no where to stay in NYC is a big deal for every traveler.

I'm not just relying on the headlines. You may state that you are aware of people who have had positive experiences. But I am aware of people with the opposite experiences. People who have booked and paid but when they arrived they were told that the accommodation was no longer available because of illegality and they lost their money. Airbnb provided no refund or compensation at all.

The NY Attorney General says 72% are illegal.

And this figure is both recent and quoted in a number of sources. If that's not 'most' then @Lynda2475 will never be convinced that there is a serious problem.
