Hi all,

Is there any one airport that is more convenient to Manhattan for a domestic flight (NYC - SFO)?

I have only flown in or out via JFK in the past.

Cheers

I return from NYC earlier in the month and used Newark and JFK and the travel time was about the same to Midtown.

Depends where exactly in Manhattan, but LaGuardia is generally the pick for me. Mind you, in poor weather and peak times it can still take quite some time. While I've never used, I suspect Newark from lower Manhattan is pretty convenient.

If you're flying First, then I'd suggest JFK on AA or Newark on United. Much better hard products on the actual flights to SFO that way.

I much prefer JFK. Much easier to get to.
LaGuardia has rules in place that prevent flights beyond 2400kms, except to DEN or on Saturdays. to get from LGA to SFO, you'd have to connect somewhere. On the other hand, there are over 20 daily non stop flights from JFK and EWR to SFO.

LGA is only connected to manhattan by bus.
JFK has the LLRR, subway and buses.
EWR has NJT, PATH and buses.

You lost me there! first, hard products?

I will be leaving from Lower Manhattan.

I don't believe there are direct LGA-SFO flights. So whilst LGA is closest, not really an option.

JFK and EWR and equally inconvenient so use whichever offers the best time/price/service/product etc.

Look at which airport is the best hub for the airline you are flying.

Newark is my fave, and I'm always headed downtown. If the wind is right, you land parallel to the NYC skyline. Crazy pretty on a clear day. The train is simple and pretty cheap, get off at Penn and you're a $10 uber to most anywhere.

I like leaving JFK on Delta, because they're medallion check in area is pretty good - full red carpet separate check in area with couches the works. I think uber black is about $85usd to jfk depending on traffic.

Haven't yet had the pleasure of LGA, but seems it's ruled out by other responses.

Vantage03 is referring to First as in if you are flying First Class.
Hard product is in the offering of American Airlines product offering for first class pax departing from JFK. The First lounge, service and product offering is good.

I hope this clarifies.

I have only flown in & out of JFK on QF 17/18.

Although my dad is from the US, and I have been to the US many times, I have never been to NYC - but I will be for the first time, finally, for work, in January.

I am flying QF7 to DFW, and then to LGA with AA.

Because I have to pack my dinner jacket as well as regular corporate work gear (lounge suit), my luggage will be check-in, and probably heavier than usual (don't forget overcoat, etc).

I'm not interested in navigating public transport stairwells with the luggage (I gave up on the tube to LHR years ago), so it's a cab for me. Which is fine as I'll be on expenses. So, I'll be intrested to see exactly how fast the trip from LGA to Manhattan is (I'm staying across the road from Central Park, on the upper east side).

Thank's for the replies, in this case I will probably stick with JFK if there is no substantial difference, maybe try the subway instead of shuttle option to get there.

It depends where your going. The A and E trains serve JFK (from different stations on the JFK Airtrain - Howard Beach and Jamaica Station). They have different routes into Manhattan and can take 40-60 mins to get there.
LIRR (Long Island Railroad) goes from Jamaica Station to Penn Station in about 20 minutes. Jamaica is a hub station on the LIRR with many of the lines converging there on the way to Penn, so Jamaica-Penn trains are more frequent then other stations.

Did, NYC-SFO with the family earlier this year. Found that I had more options flying out of JFK. We left from Midtown and had no issues getting to JFK

Have to use the NYC airports at least a dozen times a year and its an experience I always dread. Newark and JFK are both the same travel time to Manhattan. Newark is actually in another state but you have to cross rivers either way to get to Manhattan. the bridges and tunnels to Manhattan can get extremely backed up an at times take hours to cross one. JFK has the upper hand as in the event of gridlock or bad weather you can take LIRR Penn to Jamaica then the Airtrain to your terminal at JFK. I did the Penn to Newark a long time ago and cant remember why but I decided to never do it again.

Flew into and out from JFK in October. On arrival we caught a cab to midtown since we had just gotten off a red eye and didn't want to bother with the rail network. A week later we had a JFK-SFO flight with Virgin and we caught the shuttle from Penn station which took about 50 minutes and cost $17 pp.
