New website name feedback

Hang on - we go around commenting on Qantas's commercial arrangements. There is nothing wrong with our natural airline/frequent flyer curiosity!

In 6 months or so we will know who has bought the name.

I think it may have something to do with the IPO and spin off of the Qantas Frequent Flyer Program.

Chances are whoever did a deal with ADMIN also put a confidentiality clause in the agreement so he can't tell us even if he wanted to.

I will do some digging around and respond if I find out what QFF are up to.

As an internet entrepreneur for the last 12 years I can't work out why anyone would want to increase the length of their domain name :?:

So the next logical question is, how much did Qantas pay you for the domain?

;)

My thoughts exactly. None of my business, and we'll find out eventually, but still curious :)

I have no personal view on the name change and really don't think it is any of our business :!:

If admin has sold off the old domain and made some money then so be it for us and congratulations to him. We are all here for different reasons and in admin's case it is a commercial venture.

Umm should have thought to turn off iPhone. Yet to see the "new" website

As far as the name change, is my face bovvered? One thought; If the speculation is true about someone buying the domain name then it seems that that has happened not because of the success of AFF but because of the name alone

Also good to know "someone" is reading.

My old bookmark was the search for last 24 hours of threads which I loved. Now that bookmark doesn't work and I have to use the button "NEWPOSTS" when logged in. This means I cannot see something I have just posted.

Can we please have a bookmark posted that had the same functionality as described above?

Lately pages have been loading a little slower for me, anyone else having this issue, not sure if it’s something on this end or something else?

Have you tried adding the word "australian" to the start of the URL? If the site is exactly the same then it should work.

I've refrained from commenting on this one, and anything I could say would simply be Ad Hominem and add no value.

I do however agree that some of the points raised are valid from a member loyalty and domain usability standpoint. Adding the word Australian into a domain which is already in the Australian Commercial TLD (.com.au) is extemporaneous and redundant.

There is no doubt value in the domain, both from the name and the community of users behind it which has contributed to its value.

However, the domain is not vested in the community - it is vested in admin. And if admin wishes to use said domain in a way which would deliver some form of benefit, then it is their right to do so.

You may not like the outcome, but you have to accept the result and get on with it - just like the results of the election tomorrow if they don't line up with your vote and world view.

For me,searches are happening quick enough, but opening a thread can be slow.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yes, same for me.
I have actually had this problem for quite some time but I have been blaming my slightly erratic Internet connection and my old PC.

I'll comment further when I get my new Wimax connection in a few weeks.

Thank you, that is exactly what I was looking for. Life is good again. :D

Hmm and when I save it as a bookmark it only works for a little while :(. Although I can come back here and use the bookmark above, that one works.

Otherwise I have to use the "Today's Posts" link if not logged in and the "New Posts" link when logged in. The latter isn't what I want because I cannot see my new posts until someone else responds.

Did you save the URL that ends with "getdaily" or did you click the link, and then save that link, which would result in a search being performed at the time and a different URL ending with a number?

You need to save this link:

Code:
http://www.australianfrequentflyer.com.au/community/search.php?do=getdaily

I'd like to feedback a negative (sorry).

As someone who has to type in the address (as I use multiple different computers, all of which get their history/favourites routinely deleted), it's pretty annoying at how long it is now.

Frankly, I cant see the necessity for the name change.

Whilst this is a site run by Admin, we (the gold/silver members) do pay for access and privileges, which should allow us some say in things.

Admin is perfectly within his right to profit from the site as he does sink a large amount of time and effort into keeping us fussy FF'ers happy. That said, I have to agree with peoples general ideas here.

Short of being bought (the domain name) by someone (say, QFF), I fail to see the reason for change. It was stated the change more accurately reflects the actual name of the board, but IMHO any name change that makes it longer to enter into a URL bar is a bad thing. Companies pay a fortune for smaller domain names (I have a 4 letter domain name in .net.au and .com.au domains, and they're pretty tough to come by now).

Add to that the investment in time and money that several members have made for luggage tags that have the old domain name in, and surely they can't feel too wonderful about the domain name change.

As mentioned though, if the domain has been acquired, Admin may well be subject to an NDA that prohibits anything being said. As the whois database for .com.au and .net.au domains changed a while back to not show domain name expiration dates (to prevent poachers and domain 'squatters' from taking advantage) there is no way of finding out the exact expiry of the old domain either.

It won't stop me from visiting the site, but if it was simply to reflect the name, I feel it's a step backwards not forwards.

Just my 2c.
