EU bans all Indonesian airlines

Just in BBC NEWS | World | Europe | EU bans all Indonesian airlines
All 51 Indonesian airlines will be banned from the EU
All Indonesian airlines including national carrier Garuda are to be banned from the European Union.
An updated blacklist of unsafe airlines also includes operators from Bulgaria, Moldova, Angola and Ukraine. Indonesian carriers do not currently fly to Europe, but the ban serves as a warning to consumers not to use these airlines elsewhere in the world.
last time I went through LAX T4 security screening, I noted a sign posted along the queue barriers that stated something like "The TSA has determined that security procedures at Bali (DPS - Indonesia) are sub-standard and recommends that US citizens avoid this airport". So its not just the EU that has issues with the Indonesian aviation industry.

Seat belts is one of the more insightful examples you could have brought up because it has a bit of all the good stuff - particularly paternalistic laws and victimless crimes. Me ? I usually wear them on long trips, partly because I don't want to get caught, but mainly because I know it's probably good for me. Short trips I couldn't really give a stuff. Of course it's not really a victimless crime because if I need to be scraped off the road after a crash the taxpayer pays.

This one is a bit of a bugbear of mine as so many people seem to think that not wearing a seatbelt only affects them. In any driving situation it is physically impossible to control a vehicle under hard braking if you're not wearing a seatbelt as all your effort is expended trying to stop yourself from going through the windscreen. To be honest it's a perfect example of how you don't know what you don't know and so your risk assessment judgement is cough.

Fwiw the reason my friends who are pilots have given me about the phones is that not all planes have perfect condition shielding in the wiring so when they're on approach and phones start trying to aquire a signal the feedback they get through the radio isn't just annoying it's dangerous.
