Anything is within walking distance if you are prepared to walk- and walk...

My recollection is that this was always a criticism of the train route - but that it was to become irrelevant once all main services moved over to the T1 side.

Yeah with a suitcase or two it will be inconvenient, especially if it's raining or peak summer. I wouldn't be doing it before a long flight. Hope there will be a shuttle bus or something.

I recall a few years ago flying Melb to Perth then Joburg. First leg plane was packed and to much luggage brought inside and could not fit in overhead lockers so they had to be transferred to cargo. Thus the flight arrived over a hour late to Perth. Upon arriving at Perth no buses to take us to International terminal so had to get a taxi and go through all the security stuff again and eventually go on the flight -just made it- was very stressful and never going to leave from Perth again -

Part of the reason QF are being such sticklers about sending their international flights from T3 is so people avoid this sort of problem. You'll still have to do international grade security when transiting DOM>INT but the terminal change thing won't be an issue anymore.

Pretty sure the new Redcliffe station will be walking distance to Terminal 3/4?

@JohnM points out, it's about 1km away. Not convenient at all. I'm sure there will be a shuttle bus (possibly the same one that goes to the long term car parks. However, with the wait for a bus etc I can see this adding an extra 20+ minutes to the travel time. Hardly convenient. You could walk it, but who wants to when it's either raining sideways or stinking hot.

Honestly, I don't see it being a practical alternative.

As for the aircraft being used. I think QF is missing a trick by not having Y+ on this route.

Its position was moved in 2014, to service the residential areas better, and there was an expectation that T3/T4 wouldn't still be in use for long after the line was built.

For some folks the 10 minute walk to T3/4 might be more tolerated given there isn't the airport train levy which we see in Sydney & Brisbane.

Lands 8.15 pm in Joberg. No onward connections that evening. Hotel at the airport is expensive.

The Intercontinental is, but City Lodge a few more steps under cover at the back of the car park is not and IME is perfectly good.

If one is feeling really cheap, the Holiday Inn is generally about $50 with a free shuttle. Fairly average, though.

Exactly, once the T3/4 terminal closes a station for that terminal would have been a huge waste - even if worst case that’s 10 years away!

Qantas has just updated the schedule for the northern summer period (April-October), bringing forward the departure times by several hours during those months.

Much better timing for onward connections

According to the maps, it's 2km and a 25 minute walk...
Not a brilliant area to be lugging a suitcase around. I recently walked from T3 to the nearby startrack distribution centre, probably a kilometre but mostly on the road and not fun with a suitcase. Would be horrible in the heat of summer and/or poor winter in weather.

Not worried about flight more concern whether luggage from Melbourne will be on the same flight when flying Qantas as reports are not good - does anyone know about Melb - Singapore - Jnb luggage issues - whether better - my reason for asking is I want to take sporting clothing for children and dont want to arrive and find it has not arrive as will upset the schools.Appreciate comments

Presumably a transit in SIN means you are talking about flying SQ? There haven't been major luggage issues reported at SIN to my knowledge. But this is well off-topic for a Qantas related thread.
