Malaysia Airlines has unveiled new seats and a refreshed cabin interior for its Boeing 737-800 fleet. The first refurbished aircraft will enter service this month and over time a total of 38 aircraft will be progressively refurbished.

A key change is new, "leaner" seats. MH is also removing a row of business class, and adding 2-3 rows of economy. To fit this many extra seats in, I can only assume the seat pitch is also being reduced (or the toilets at the rear of the aircraft being made smaller). Two of the extra rows of Y will be behind the exit rows.

The aircraft will offer wireless streaming entertainment.

Looks like it is Business that is having most of the seat pitch trimmed. Down to 39 inch from 42 inch.

Still with 'leaner' seats it may not feel that much different

Agree, the seat pitch in J is being reduced. The exit rows aren't moving though (I assume) and there are two more rows of Y now behind them ;)

Looks like there is one extra row in front of the exits, and one extra row behind the exits. This could be being done the way Qantas got it's extra row in (slimline toilets, galley reconfiguration). And the slimmer, err leaner, seats help as well.

Could be new slimline toilets, yes.

The number of extra rows behind the exit rows seems to vary as there are two current configurations. It's either 1 or 2 more depending on the aircraft.

To recap the latest MH 737 product changes:

- No winglet headrest in economy
- No seatback IFE
- 3x extra rows of economy
- The last row of economy now can't recline
- 1x less row of biz class
- Reduced legroom in biz class
- Batik pattern on seat
- Lots of blue

Some might call this...an 'Oasis'.... ;)

The day after MH announced their cabin refresh, their biggest regional competitor announces product updates.

In Qantas language that’s an ‘enhancement‘.

I like the look of the new interior. My only crticism is that foldable headrests would have been good to have, especially when these planes do flights up to 5 hours.

Took a couple of MH flights last week. One of the flights was on a 737 with the new cabin interior. The other was with the older style interior. Both in the Y cabin. Have to say I'm not really a fan of the new interior. First thing you notice when you step onto the aircraft is the excessively blue colour scheme. It's very bright and also very sterile and doesn't really feel calming or relaxing - reminds me of the kind of colour scheme you'd find in a hospital. The seats themselves were also rigid and lacked padding and were not comfortable - I would expect to see these kinds of seats on an LCC but not a full service carrier. I don't know why, but the seat pitch felt more generous on the older config even though they both have a 30-inch pitch. MHstudio streaming entertainment didn't work on my flight. USB-C was a nice addition however. The flight I took on the 737 with the older style interior was much more comfortable overall.

I think this is because of the slim-line seats, we feel like we have more space .. it's a mind-perception thingy, I believe. I feel the same way when I fly 6E in India. They had these 320neo with slim seats and I felt like they were spacious than the QF or AI 737's/787's

Depends on where you’re seated…too far back in J and it could be just two sticks…minus the satay….You use them to eat your nasi lemak. 🤣

I flew in one of these last night. It was full (it had not been -far from it). A late cancellation on another airline had PAX moved across.

Agree with @dylarr about the blueness.

I was in row 1 and was comfortable enough.

BYOD IFE worked fine for the short flight.

I noticed with seat preallocaten it showed the old map - but rows 4 and 5 along with the exit row seats were unavailable for selection, so I guess it was planned.

If travelling in Y, you'll be on a new configuration if row 4 is the first Y-class row. Y in the old configuration starts at row 5.

Row 4 now costs more even for OWE whereas row 5 on the old configuration was free. Row 4 on the new configuration is considered an "Extra Legroom Seat" whereas row 5 on the old configuration was a "Standard Seat" which had great legroom.

AFAIK only a "Standard Seat" is free for OWE. At least that's what was happening for me. :(

I am traveling in MH J from SYD to LHR next week. Due to some very late approvals from my workplace, trying to confirm bookings today as not much left for this route in J on any airline (well not much through AMEX travel - which is our provider). this is my first time on MH J, and I have requested any row in A to get the single seat. What else am I to expect/experience as to the MH product?
