I flew BNE to LAX this week and the new Amenity Kit or should I say bits and pieces were handed out.
I preferred the old kit where everything was together in one zipped bag. Now you are handed individulal items an eye mask, socks, toothbrush and toothpaste, shaving cream and blade as well as a small square plastic box containg ear plugs a mint and a moisturising product. Where can you put all these items? There is very little storage in the seats as it is, so I resorted to putting it all into the slot for shoes. I think I will bring along one of the old bags next time so I can stuff everything into it instead of having to juggle it all. I vote to bring back the old amenity kit where everything was together. I would be interested to hear what others think.

I had the new kit on my HKG-SYD flight last week and have mixed emotions. I think its good that they are separating things as I do chuck out a lot of the stuff and mostly keep the facial products (for me or mrssimongr) - I dont wear the socks or eye mask (perhaps I might sleep better if I did) and rarely use the toothbrush + paste so that is good. However it all just looks so cheap now - and teh plastic container is awful (but the products inside were well received by mrssimongr).

I am just waiting to see when they start handing out PJ's in J :)

I think the resale value on e-Bay will be lower for the new kits than the old ones. Perhaps that is part of Qantas' reasoning?

I think that just making available the items rather than giving out amenity kits is a good idea

I agree. Last flight I just took the toothbrush and passed on the eye shades and socks (I have a drawer full of them at home already and don't use them on the plane) and shaving kit (I am lazy and use an electric shaver). Though maybe I should start collecting the shaving kits as Mini NM#1 will soon be needing a steady supply  .

But it would be good if all the components could fit into the one package.

Very low rent, look more like hard kindergarten crayon cases than amenity packs. At approx 15 x 10 x 2cm, they take up about 1/3 the volume that the previous ones did. This makes shipping them a lot easier.

Definitely a huge step down; makes the BA ones look luxurious. I'm sure Mr Newson wouldn't have designed any thing like this for First class where he would normally be ensconced.

They ware handed out the other evening along with the socks & eyshades. Toothbrush and razor kits on request.

I generally don't use any items, only the ear plugs if I don't have my own. So I think having items available on request is a good idea. The trouble is that it creates more work for the FA's 'taking orders'. I am sure the ammenity kits would be the cheaper option, although more wasteful....

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Thats the big thing you see - on CX the FAs are too busy taking my G&T order to waste time on passing out individual pack elements - which is why does it take QF so long to bring me my aperitif drink compared to CX? BA isnt that much better but it seems its at least 30 mins on QF before I get my first drink!

I am really really spoilt aren't I?

BA do this too - shavers only on request.

From the pictures in the QF Mag, the new J kit looks pretty awful, although the previous one wasn't too flash either - nothing much fits in it:shock: . The F kit at least is useful (I use it now as travel kit and for riding to work).

The PJ's look OK though, although the F PJs come with slippers:cool:

Do we know which routes are the selected routes yet? They weren't on HKG-SYD recently.

Dang! I didn't ever think there would be an e-Bay value in these - I have a GOOD collection - from the old green zip bags (I like these the best) to the horid blue bags - the only problem with all my amenity bags except perhaps the last one I got is none of them have the small cans of shaving foam anymore - the only item I use... Anyone want to make a bid on the foamless bags?
:D

Flew QF in F back from HKG 12 days ago. The mens' amenity pack is nothing to write home about, but I will be using it to store my iPod in future. It's a mix-and-match plan as well, and it is better than the BA First pack (which is a hideous velour number). The new PJs are OK, but the new eye mask is HUGE and really, really good. It's really wide, so that the eye patches extend around the side of the head to the front of the ears (even for wide-headed folk like me). I would buy these in a shop if I saw any quite so good.

It's nice to see people enjoying the service instead of giving grief to QANTAS as per normal.... QF give us a good service - if you (collective) don't like it, get over it, fly another airline and enjoy, leave me alone as well as the other 4,123,473 flyers who enjoy QANTAS- go figure....

Mr!

Well I am even lazier and have a beard. It really doesnt matter to me if the kit is downgraded.I only use the toothbrush and paste after the meals. This is one presumable cost cutting measure I am all in favour of.
munitalP it is a free country meaning criticism has to be expected.I jumped ship 5 years ago. However the main reason was price.JAL in J to JFK is much cheaper and they had flat beds across the pacific well before QF.I still fly the occasional QF service-usually BNE-LAX but with an AA code and my QP life membership is still very useful in the states getting me access to AC.

Got one of these new amenity kits yesterday. First thing I could think was "Wow, a happy meal!" (apologies if it's already been said :)).

I'm all for the idea of reducing the size/waste...but it still seems excessively large to me. 3 small bottles of moisteriser/lip balm, some mints and some ear plugs...it could easily be half the size and still fit in the eye shade, socks etc...

Still, not complaining. It's always good to try something new. Should be getting the PJ's on my return flight too. :)

Cheers,
- Febs.

Speaking of PJs, the F cabin ran out of PJs on my return flight from HK. One woman missed out, and she was not a happy camper. The new PJs are fine enough, but what I really liked were the socks with the rubber grips.

As to the comment about enjoying QF, I generally enjoy it when I'm up the front, and sometimes at the back as well. I've been lucky enough to get points tickets to BKK from Sydney on BA F, and SYD to HKK on QF F, and that's this year alone. I won't look for more points tickets until later in the year, as I've two work trips between now and then. I think that sometimes people lose sight of the fact that travelling Business or First on points is a bit of a treat. At least, it is for me...

I think the waste referred to was the eyeshades, socks etc that often are not used and are just dumped (I am guilty of this if I have multiple flights and hand luggage is getting full).

@Hardieboys - its different strokes for different folks. I am lucky enough to fly up the pointy end (well J anyway) all the time but the reward for all that travel is that I expect to be in J when flying an award (paid with points not expecting op-up). The airlines make a packet off me and the reason I stick to oneworld is the status and J awards. YMMV :)

I'm with Hardieboys, although if I was earning hudreds of thousands of points per year, my attitude may well change. :)

To me, an award ticket is a treat, and when searching for availability I usually expect the worst. I've been pleasantly surprised though - for example, booking an LAX-HNL flight tonight, I expected to have to be a bit flexible with the date. Not the case - I had a choice of four flights on the day I wanted to travel. :) Worst I've had is having to take a Jetstar HNL-SYD flight rather than QF, because I was lazy and booked a day late. :( Oh well, the joys of being a mere Gold. ;)

I use my points for my girlfriend and family as well as my self, so I'm more than happy to use the points to their fullest potential by booking all award tickets in economy. :)

As always though, EMMV.

(Wow, that got off topic didn't it? ;))

Cheers,
- Febs,

Flew J to SIN this morning and they didn't have enough mens amenity kits and had to hand some blue ones out. They had about 6 cans of shaving cream and with 22 men in J, they ran out very fast. So some people who wanted it missed out. They had one more razor than shaving cream.
