Re: Qantas Platinum One now includes free 'Partner Platinum' status

I am planning to get to P1 this year but my +1 is already WP and will maintain it.
Seems I will miss out on the complimentary Platinum membership just because we are both loyal :(.

Surely QF could extend it to family members when the partner is already WP or if the member does not have a partner?

Perhaps we can suggest this to Lesley during the upcoming meetings. :) I do feel you make an excellent point.

Re: Qantas Platinum One now includes free 'Partner Platinum' status

As you’ve read, we’ve announced a suite of new “enhancements” for Platinum One members, with some of the benefits taking effect from today.

I’d like to clarify that these are not changes to the Platinum One tier. Rather, additional perks as part of the ongoing evolution of the Platinum One flying tier.

For those who’ve just joined the conversation, the highlights include:

- Platinum tier for domestic partner of Platinum One member, in addition to the complimentary Gold membership option at 2,400 Status Credits
- Booking and Service fee waivers
- Waiver for any fare differential that may be applicable at the airport to move to an earlier Qantas Domestic flight when travelling on a flexible fare
- Opportunity to earn up to 175,000 more bonus Qantas Points per membership year*
- Double points earn on Qantas Restaurants
- Complimentary Qantas Golf Premium Membership

*75,000 bonus points have already been credited to Platinum One members who have 5,000 Status Credits in this membership year from eligible QF and JQ flights, and 100,000 bonus points for Platinum One members who have already reached 7,000 Status Credits.

wonder what has prompted this? ie lots of P1s dropping down to WP or perhaps trying to pre-empt something VA is about to announce?

These enhancements are obviously meant to try to maintain your P1 customers - who are, with all due respect a relatively small but none the less important group of customers. But where are the enhancements for the much larger number of Platinum and Gold members - who not only make up a much larger proportion of your loyal customers - but no doubt also play a very important part in promoting QF by word of mouth.

Looks like QFF decided to provide some additional benefits that won't cost much but look good on paper, which is a smart move from a marketing point of view (partner of P1 has SG already, phone booking fee was normally waived anyway and I don't remember ever paying difference fee when moving to an earlier flight on flexi ticket).
Basically the main new benefits for P1s who earn under 5k SCs will be extra 50k points (assuming they were choosing the partner gold option) and partner WP instead of SG (assuming they have a partner and the partner is not WP already).

Realistically, prior to these changes (and even after these changes), there was no real difference between WP and P1. Earn is the same, no 'free' upgrades to speak of, lounge access is the same, alliance partner service is exactly the same etc. These changes, if you use them, slightly open a very narrow gap.

Being a P1 for well over a year now, experience has shown that the only real benefit is row 4/23 seat selection at time of booking. Delivery of everything else is patchy at best.

Some good benefits, most I wont be able to attain as I'm not aiming to re-qualify at this stage :(

But I do look forward to complimentary Qantas Golf membership... I expect this will mean I qualify for the bonus 5000 points for being one of the first to sign up too :D

The annoying thing is my partner only flies with me, and all on minimum points guaranteed distance flights... so she doesn't need the status bonus, nor lounge access. My sister on the other hand, I've bought QC for her the past 2 years and she's looking to fly solo to Asia next year... seems much more up her street than my partner :/

The restrictions to domestic partners only for PWP does seem a bit stingy, why this couldn't have had the same rules as PG I don't know.

I notice that the moving to an earlier flight specified flexible fare. Although my guess would be that most WP1s would tend to be on flexi's domestically.

At least to be a family benefit like point transfers, not any friend or colleague (which might result in membership sales).

What continues to offend me is that Qantas and Qantas FFE Program continue to indulge in gratuitous spin. These benefits, on analysis are quite minor. However, they engage in a level of spin that would do Kevin Rudd proud. Seriously, they are communicating with a sophisticated demographic who can sort the chaff from the grain very quickly - why patronise your valued customers in this manner.

Well I am P1, and am quite pleased with the announcements, was happy to announce them to my spouse with similar "gratuitous spin" and he was also quite pleased. Perhaps we are not from your sophisticated demographic.

Not all spouses are stay at home WAGs who follow their partners around the world. Some work, and travel on their own, and hence WP is a great benefit. And on the once a year we travel overseas with other family members, I will be very happy to take them in the F lounge rather than currently to the J lounge now that we'll be able to have a guest allowance each.

RR quick question if we have already nominated our "domestic partner" for the 2400 partner gold this year will there now be an option to reallocate this to another eligible relative or to change the allocation to points?

I did not infer in my comments that spouses of P1 are stay at home WAGS - what I did indicate was that most of the enhancements are very minimal and QF uses spin in their marketing to FF's that is often gratuitous and patronising. Its great you get Platinum membership for your spouse - with all its benefits. My comments are about the marketing language of QF.

I agree the new benefits are minor but I don't think QFF are over-marketing them. The email I received was quite informative, didn't find anything patronising about it.
I also think you are making wrong assumptions about the people who are the prime target here. Being WP or P1 doesn't mean you are more 'sophisticated' then others, it just means you fly a lot.

I am defining people who fly a lot as sophisticated consumers - not sophisticated in the general sense ( I mean read this forum and see how savvy and sophisticated the demographic is when it comes to getting a good deal and being aware of spin). In terms of referring to ff as "sophisticated" in the general sense - I'll leave that up to the individual to define themselves.

People who frequent forums like AFF, FT etc. are indeed more savvy then other FFs but I assume the majority of QF WPs and P1s are not active members. A lot of QFFers I met over the years don't know or couldn't care less about points, SCs and other stuff being discussed in these forums. They are loyal to QF either because their work place books it for them or they just feel comfortable flying the same familiar airline who gives them the elite treatment they are used to.

I'm a little miffed that I opted for the partner gold insted of the 50,000 points 10 days ago. I wouldn't have taken that option had I known the news...

What's the big deal? Primary benefit seems to be the fly ahead option, which VA has been offering to gold and platinum members all along.
