I remember watching the landing. I was in Wagga and went to the Commercial Club with a couple of mates to watch on a very small black and white TV.

Thank you Neil

A modest hero to many....RIP

A great human and an astronaut. We should be inspired by how he lived. RIP Neil.

‘‘For those who may ask what they can do to honour Neil, we have a simple request. Honour his example of service, accomplishment and modesty, and the next time you walk outside on a clear night and see the moon smiling down at you, think of Neil Armstrong and give him a wink.’’ - Armstrong’s family, announcing his death in a written statement.

The only man of our era who you can be sure that kids will know the name of a thousand and probably ten thousand years from now. A modest man of incredible achievements.

RIP to a great man. Definitely a giant leap to mankind.

Let's not forget Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, all the NASA staff, and former USSR to make this a reality.

Of course, just to make it relevant to AFF, if he earn 1 point per mile for this return trip he would have earned 477710 base miles, without any top status bonuses.

Saw this news in the J lounge today and had to choke back a few tears. The landing was two years before I was born but having grown up in the era afterwards it was almost as I had experienced it. Space flight (and consequently science fiction) is a real passion for me.

That message from his family is just perfect - might have to step outside this evening and raise a glass to a true hero.

Very sad indeed. My 9yo daughter sent me a text this morning asking if I'd heard about it..

One thing being a scout leader I've used the fact that 10 of the 12 men to walk on the moon were in Scouts. Neil was an Eagle Scout which is a similar award to our Queen Scout. Good motivation. He also carried the World Scouting Badge to the moon.

Buzz Adrin posted this tribute on his website.

Neil Armstrong was a someone who youngsters should aspire to be like.

I remember watching the landing on TV.
Our primary school only had one TV so all the students were allowed to go to nearby friends' houses to watch it.
What an amazing day...

RIP

A Neil Armstrong Day would be quite fitting in memory of this man's feat. IMO. In the USA, to begin with.

Condolences to his family, a truly great individual. Although this happened before I was born I have always been fascinated by the sheer magnitude of the Moon landing. I highly recommend a visit to the Kennedy Space Center it's an amazing place to visit.
The following tribute paid by Richard De Crespigny:

"The world has lost a gentleman, friend and quintessential pilot-explorer in Neil Armstrong. The greatest. Thanks for the memories. Rich"
