I'll try this again. Seems the first try got lost in the internet somewhere!

So I had a slow few days at the start of this month and decided to put together this trip report as it was a kind of interesting route with a few airlines. Some of the details are a little hazy as it was around this time last year and again as with my first trip report no photos, but the camera will stay close for future trips ...

Seat 18K

Well this was my first time flying in Premium Economy. The seats were the new leather versions and they are pretty comfy. I managed to score the first row of premium so the legroom was excellent. As I was traveling with others who were spread out in premium they all agreed that it was a fairly comfy environment to travel in. The only gripe was one broken vport(virgins entertainment system) and the window seats have equipment boxes under them so there is some loss of legroom.

The cabin crew were very helpful on this sector. Pre flight drinks included water, OJ and champagne. There was a drinks and snacks service within 15mins of being airborne with the meal service following 45mins after that. The meals were fairly good with 3 choices chicken, pork or veg. I had the pork dish which was fairly filling with veggies, side salad roll mousse and cheese and crackers. Following the meal were were offered some fresh fruit and some baileys or brandy. The fruit was offered a few more times and so were some Pringles and some ice cream bars. Towards the end of the flight we were offered a choice of a sausage roll or cheese and feta roll. These were good old Mrs Mac versions and hit the spot well after a few drinks were consumed during the flight!!
After a smooth landing into Hong kong it was off for some duty free shopping.

Well this was a full flight. Although Premium and Upper class were packed on the Sydney leg I couldn’t see an empty seat anywhere in economy.
Decided to miss the meal service and catch some sleep. One good ting I like was being able to choose to listen to a cd and have it continuously playing and watch the flight track at the same time. Something I can never get the Qantas system to do.
Managed a good 8hrs sleep on this flight.
Served breakfast around 1.5 hours out of Heathrow. Good sausage and egg muffin. Only downside was the warm coffee. Was really looking to a nice hot one after the long flight.

Caught the express into town and caught up with some friends over brunch before heading back to Heathrow for my afternoon flight.

This flight was operated by the recently sold GB Airlines. The onboard experience is no different to that of the BA mainline fleets, although the seats looked close to the end of their life. Really run down. Service was ok for this short flight. Drinks and sandwiches served. I stuck with the pretzels.

Arrived into Malaga airport which is undergoing massive expansion. Love the laid back approach to immigration the spanish have, all they want to know is what beaches to visit in sydney!

So after a few days traveling around to various parts of spain, italy, france and tunisia for work it was time to head back home. Around 24hrs before starting the journey home, word came through that I would have to make my way over to NY in 4 days time. So it looked like a long few days ahead.

A 100% full flight. I got a seat in the first row of Y. Boarding was a little late due to the late inbound flight. Looked like everybody onboard was traveling with rollaboards so about halfway through boarding the overhead space battle began. I managed to sneak mine ahead into the J class bins so I sat back and caught up on some newspapers.
Shortly after takeoff the drinks service started and I managed to grab me and and my colleagues a nice supply of Johnnie walker so we wouldn’t go thirsty if they ran out later. well you have to prepare for the worst....right? :D
So after trying to dissect the 2 sandwiches we were given it was decided we would pass on them as we felt food poisoning wasn’t such a good idea with still a day of traveling to go.
So around 20mins out of LHR the captain came on and said that we had been placed into a holding pattern and that there was a problem with a plane coming into land and the delay looks like an additional 20+mins. So it may be a tight race to get to from T1 to T4.

Well soon enough we land only to find another 5 min delay as there was a plane on our gate still. Then the mad rush to Terminal Transfers only to be confronted with a nice long line. Well after running to the other end of the terminal we managed to get to the gate which was already showing flight closed, lucky that they were waiting for us, well we were a little group of 6 that filled up a few Club World seats

Settled in to the nice CW seats. We were held at the gate due to the traffic backlog from the earlier incident. Didn’t mind as the champagne was flowing. As I didn’t get much sleep the previous night so I turned in before the meal service and grabbed some sleep. The others who stayed up said it was ok. I woke up after 7 hours and made my way to the galley where I was offered a nice focaccia type sandwich and fruit salad which was great. It also seemed like I had got a seat with a dud inseat power outlet, so only managed 2 and a bit hrs of work. The service manager came for a chat and offered to let me charge my notebook at a empty first class seat but I said I was very protective of my notebook and would have to keep it company up the front there while it charges...well it was worth a shot!
Landed only around 10mins late and did the mad dash to the lounge to snag a shower and then charge the laptop as I wanted to stay awake for a bit on the next flight and get some work done.

Surprisingly there was a few spare seats on this sector. A pretty bumpy 20mins after takeoff. Some awesome clouds out the window stretching far above us. I remember the meal being some sort of beef noodle dish which was fairly good. The entertainment system was restarted twice but stayed good from then on. Time seem to fly as just when I was finishing up some work the smells of breakfast made its way down the cabin. I still don’t get why its served so early. More than 2hrs to go to sydney making it around 3am. By my watch there was still around an hour from when the last few plates were cleared to landing...

After landing I made my way through duty free to grab a few things. I was hoping to be selected to bypass the customs line but remembered I had ticked the “been to africa in the last few days” box but coming down the stairs there was virtually no queue and my bag was already waiting.

So the next part of this adventure begins around 24 hrs later where I’m making my way back to the airport with my bags barely emptied and repacked for 3 weeks in NY.
With the the late notice for this trip the travel people were having a hard time finding any J seats so I was booked into whY on QF107 and then into J for the trip home on QF108. At the airport I decided to check if there were any free J seats at the last minute but I was still out of luck. Checking in the nice agent decide to have a look at what other seats were available as I had been pre allocated the first bulkhead row. She asked if I would like a emergency row and she would block of the middle seat. Being 6f 3” I said great. So made my way to the QP and settled down into reading an Aussie paper for that last time for 3 weeks.

Boarding was called on time and I made my way down to the gate I somehow managed to attract the secondary security people and decided to empty all of my belongings out onto the table in front of everybody waiting to board. I watched as they took out my camera pretty roughly and I said “hey careful, you break it you bought it!” only to have the guy answer back “ I’ll do whatever I like” Well I was pretty much ready to let rip until the supervisor walked over and said is everything all right and I explained the exchange word for word. He told the guy who was unpacking my stuff to move away to the wand area and asked another guy to pack my things up carefully so I could get going.

So I boarded and saw it was a pretty full flight. Found my seat and then started chatting to Barry or “Bazza” as I started to call him. A fantastic flight attendant who was stationed at my emergency row. I was explaining the last few days of travels and the lack of seats up front on all the flights today. He said it was full for the last 2 weeks as he was trying to get a family member onboard but had no luck either. The lady in the window seat started chatting and telling of a similar story as well. After takeoff Bazza disappeared for a bit but came back discreetly with 2 glasses and a bottle of Bubbly from up front. He said he’d have a look and see if there were any spare J meals but the champagne should help get us through the flight! Told you he was a great guy.

Meals came out pretty fast. My seat partner and I stuck with the whY meals which were pretty good. I had the Beef curry with rice. Nice portion and really hot. Bazza snuck us some cheese and crackers after the main meal so I was pretty full and decided to catch a movie. I went with Apollo 13 and it passed the time nicely. Just before trying to catch some sleep, my now best friend Bazza dropped by with a amenity kit and PJ’s and see if there was anything else we wanted before sleeping. I managed to get to sleep before we hit fiji and woke up just after Hawaii so I think that about 6 hrs.

After waking up I decided to get stuck into some more movies so I got stuck into Daniel Craig as James Bond and it wasn’t bad. Brekky was served and I think it was some kind of omelette with sausages and I got an OJ as well.

Landing was uneventful until we got to the ramp and they powered down before connecting the mobile power supply or starting the apu so we sat onboard with the evacuation tones going and only the emergency lighting on for a few minutes till this was fixed then we were towed onto the bay. For anyone who hasn't experienced this just think about you home smoke alarm going off about every third row on both aisles. Loud, pretty much describes it.

Thanked Bazza for the exceptional service he gave on to days flight. Its the little things that make the time fly by. Hope I run into him again on another QF Longhaul.

The mad dash started straight after the doors opened. I often find the starboard isle moves faster so lucky for me I was off pretty fast and overtook a few premium passengers. Only around 15 people in front of me in the immigration line so only took 10 mins. 3 officers looking after the 30 US & canadian passengers and 2 others looking after the other 280 people

After picking up my bag then dropping it back in for the next sector I made my way to the lounge and got a nice comfy seat and good coffee (coffee from outside the lounge)

Boarding was delayed due to the slow security search of the aircraft.
A nice short taxi today and we were airborne within minutes of leaving the gate, very rare for LAX. Captain came on and advised that we should be able to make up most of the time in the air. Lunch was served and I choose the ravioli pasta and it was fine. I urged myself to stay awake for this flight even though all the shades were down and pretty much 95% of people were on sydney time and sleeping. A uneventful flight. I kept the map on while I was doing work and snuck a few looks out the window at some amazing countryside. Had a good chat to the guys in the galley. They had a long day ahead of them as they have to op QF10L8 back so not chance to see the sights of NY. Had a great full circle approach to the west of Manhattan and past LGA then to the south of JFK before moving back up the the coastline to JFK. The bags beet us off the plane and it was straight into the car to
Queens to have dinner with some friends then off to the hotel where I was put up in which was the Marriott at times square.

So during 3 very full weeks I managed to get out and tick off a few more things that I hadn’t done in NY. Got along to the UN which was great. Took a Sunset cruise around the south half of the island. Start off around 42nd st then south all the way to the Manhattan Bridge which you hit around dusk then off to the Statue of Liberty before heading back up to the wharf while watching the city lights come alive. Saw heaps of shows and plenty of bars and clubs. Glad I got to go see Yankee stadium before its pulled down when the new one is completed at the end of the year.

So NY must come to an end so I head out to JFK after lunch as I was with another colleague who was flying BA to back to europe. Check in was ok. No one was manning the business counter though but there was was no line and I only waited 2mins. Security was only a 5 min wait then up to the lounge with a good drink, relaxed and waited for the boarding call.

Boarding was on time and was one of the last on and that was before 7pm so looked like we me get away on time which we did. Had a water onboard during the taxi, which I timed at 72mins so a little longer than the 1 hr sched. the captain advised that we were “only” plane number 54 in the line to take off. There was a collective groan from down the back which made myself and other laugh a little.

Dinner service started about 30 mins into the flight which was great as I was a little hungry. so here are the choices...

Starters- Salad of Paprika Lamb and Orzo Balsamic dressing
Mains -
Marinated Sea bass with green beans and black sesame sauce
Roast chicken and veggies with Port Jus
Sicilian style Beef fillet with braised eggplant and capsicum salsa

Desert-
Cheese and dried fruit
Pineapple and coconut tart with passionfruit Mascarpone
Sliced fresh fruit

Valrhona Chocolates

After the salad I chose the Beef which was really good and not dry like it always seems to be and the sliced fruit. I had some paperwork that I had to get done so that pretty much filled up the rest of the flight to LA.

After landing I joined what seemed like half the the plane in the line for the lounge. It stretched back a good 25m. Once inside it was pretty full but luckily my seat mate from the flight waved me over and had a seat next to him. Seems he’s used to this as he does this flight every 3 weeks. Now there is some good points being earned!

Boarding was very fast and we got away just a little late. Had a nice OJ before takeoff. Only a 15min wait for takeoff tonight. The attendants jumped into action once the seatbelt sign went off as many people were wanting to get to sleep. I filled in the breakfast menu even though im not really sure what i would feel like to eat in 10 hrs time.

Supper Menu
Toasted Prosciutto, swiss cheese, dill pickle and sweet onion relish panini
Bowl of Prawn and Ramen noodle soup
Chicken in vermouth, tarragon and cream with cauliflower gratin
Mexican braised beef with black beans, steamed rice and corn salsa

Desert
Cheese and dried fruit
Date and hazelnut cake with Creme Anglaise
Sliced fruit

Being up the front of this section I was one of the last people served. I chose the nice and simple prawn and noodle soup and passed on the desert. Changed into the pj’s and settled in to watch some movies. Ended up just surfing through a few before turning in. Got a good 7hrs of sleep and was woken up by the movement of tables being set across the isle from me.
I went for some muesli and tomato and eggs on toast with a good Grinders coffee to kick start the day.

We made our approach down the coastline and landed with a nice quick taxi to the gate. Grabbed some more duty free and got picked to bypass customs which is always nice and made my way home and looking forward to spending more than 1 day at home after the 4 weeks of traveling.
