I've been hearing about these mystery flights... are they still a reality?

Seems like a cool way to spend a weekend!

I did one ages ago, but as far as I know they are an extinct species (at least for the airlines - IIRC there is a company that organises them, but don't think they are too cheap)

Mystery Flights Australia - Bookings & Gift Certificates - (02) 9971 4922 - A company that specialises in creating Mystery Flight packages. (IMHO, you're really just paying for someone to book a random flight and produce some pretty documentation around it!)

Or - if in Melbourne:

Qantas have a 'mystery flight' ex-Melbourne available on Good Friday in support of the RCH Melbourne
About Qantas - In the Community - Good Friday Appeal
* note no points earnt on this option!

Apart from those two, I don't know of any other mystery flight options within Australia.

Ah, this brings back good memories. My very first flight was a mystery flight; and in fact I still have the paper ticket and boarding passes...

I can remember a work colleague who was going from syd-per for a week on the Monday morning.

He went on a mystery flight on the Sunday and wouldn't you know, ended up in Perth.

So he cancelled the first leg as he was already there!

Are there web sites in Australia that post mistake fares or super cheap last minute fares?

Something like the FlyerTalk mileage run forum... but would include DJ, Tiger and Jet*?

This would be especially good for me as I can't really plan too far ahead for my stay in Australia because I simply don't know where I'll be four months from now... but get super bored on the weekends and wouldn't mind for a quick getaway if the price is right... i.e. my recent $50 SYD-CHC each way booking... that was the cheapest I could find so I jumped on it, even though the taxes killed the deal, but at the same time I'm glad I'm going to New Zealand because if I wait too long I won't be able to squeeze it in my schedule while I'm in Australia.

I still want to see Cairns, Darwin, Perth, Hobart... and even some of the neighboring islands (especially New Caledonia) but don't really want to pay top dollar to go for a weekend.

thanks,
--Russ :)

Perth would most likely be your priciest option, although DRW/CNS can come in close. If you can land a sale, you can get anywhere between 189-229 each way in flying Qantas, possibly a bit cheaper if flying Virgin which is also adequate IMHO.

I thought the "real" mystery flights were an Ansett thing, and they died with Ansett.

I would take mystery flights if the red roo organised them, wouldn't be bothered if they were J*, DJ or Tiger metal

Mr!

well... I'm willing to mix and match, sadly dates don't work yet... like current Tiger sale $39 SYD-MEL... $30 MEL-PER... I would so jump on that! Even if I get no benefit flying Tiger.

I still have my boarding passes (and paper tickets) from the mystery flight I did on the Red Roo in 1996

JerseyVics, your best bet for cheap local fares is this forum, where futaris and some others post the offers instantaneously. ;)
Using alerts on google news is sometimes helpful, but I often find the specials posted here before the airline bothers to e-mail.

Check my bargainconfidential blog and sites like ozbargain.com (but we're all slow compared to futaris!) ;)

Why not give me some $$$ and I'll book a flight for you, a mystery one too ;)

Sure... I'll give you $50 cash... get me to Adelaide, Perth, Brisbane, Darwin, or Cairns any weekend between now and September.

Thanks,

Now that isn't a mystery flight anymore, is it? I thought its you pay me $50, give me the dates, and you will find out where you are off to only at time of check-in :D

In my experience you'd find out the night before, that was ex-PER though; may have been different for the eastern states!

haha... as long as $50 includes the price of the flight... you can certainly surprise me! Shoot, I'll bump it up to $100... return!

Hope you enjoy flying tiger with no luggage..........

I do enjoy flying with no luggage... in fact the very first time I had to check in a bag was on my flight from NYC to SYD!

I always travel light in the US... so why not here?

By the way, I love the mystery stuff with Virgin Blue... not that I'm discovering a new world here but they have some crazy unadvertised fares...

like SYD-CHC Go! fare for $50 each way... $230 total with taxes/fees (I'm going next weekend... May 1 thru May 4)

or SYD-TSV Go! fare at $75 each way... $150 return... lately they had happy hour advertised at $95 and $85 for a few days... but never for the days I wanted to go... last night, I snatched a seat for the FlyerTalk Cairns DO, leaving May 22nd thru May 24th

or TSV-CNS Go! fare at $49... probably not fantastic, but it was 50% off the Bluesaver rate... and worked well with my Cairns DO itinerary...

Now that the east coast is more or less done on my holiday, I'll have to start checking the Adelaide, Darwin and Perth flights... oh yea, Hobart wouldn't be too bad either but I'll leave it off for warmer months.

--Russ

PS... if anyone sees a cheap unadvertised fare and remembers this post, please do not hesitate to mention it... especially if its for a short weekend trip... chances are I'll take advantage of it while still in Australia. Thanks!

Mystery Flights are still up and running - simply enter Mystery Flights in Google.

I have just returned from a great trip with them - with everything included. They even have a South Pacific option
