I am a total novice at finding QF and partner awards altho quite adept at star awards. I don't understand why i can find 2 seats in business class on 23rd dec to delhi via hong kong, from sydney. Yet i can't find 2 seats in business just for syd-hkg on same date. I really want to go to hong kong, not delhi. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yield management forces at play - in all likeliness there would be a greater demand for J Award seats for HKG compared to SYD-DEL. You may have to call QF to see if there are any other options of getting to HKG on the 23rd December (don't forget options via SIN and KUL), as the direct options would have been snapped up very early on.

There are others who may suggest book the award via DEL, and get your bags tagged to HKG only.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

CX uses married segment control, that's why.

thanks to both of you. i started looking as soon as awards became available for that time of year. I don't have to use qf points as i have heaps of UA miles. I would just like to fly direct to hong kong some time.
