My Health Record

What were they saying about keeping your heath record safe, secure, and private...

Hmmmm. Where exactly is your heath record right now? On your GP's server? Outsourced to some central database keeper? In the cloud?

Who has access to it?

If people aren't concerned about that enough to find out and make sure it's totally secure, I don't understand the great concern about the Federal system, Even with its faults, it will be much more secure.

As always YMMV .... what's the result on this little poll? Can't be bothered tallying up the posts, but I'm willing to guess it's a big majority win for the Opt out vote. And then there was the thing with the computer system crashing (2 / 3 times) due to the huge numbers trying to submit their Opt out request.

Oh, I'm sure you are right. But those against are always more vocal than those OK with as proposal :) BTW I'm about to follow you back to Mexico ( City). Gotta check out that mega temple

Health Records, at the local level, only really became more secure when IT based systems were introduced. Up to that time paper-based files could and did walk off in all directions. But off course with new technology, as I am sure we have all experienced, is the tendency to try and stretch it further. So these days specialists on call for emergency cases can see the readings, scans and notes of a patient before they leave their house to race to the hospital.
All the medicos I have spoken to in recent times (and that is quite a few) say this saves lives, because carefully considered treatments can begin before they arrive on scene. I have heard that a number of studies have already shown that this is the case.
However, with IT systems, remote access etc, there are risks of information being exposed to third parties. It comes down to the risk assessment, and that as things stand the proven benefits of remote access outweigh the risks of health data being accessed by unauthorised parties.
As others have said, the MyHealth record is a summary of treatments at the local level, whether in hospital or by GPs, or in specialists rooms. In this case the same claims are made, that having access to health records in an emergency where someone presents far away from home, will save lives and/or reduce harm. But I believe it will be some years down the track before the statistical records can confirm whether this is in fact the case. I opted-in to the "personally controlled electronic health record" or PCEHR some years ago before it became the opt-out MyHealth record.

Enjoy. The one that we missed, but will return to tick off is Calakmul ... takes a bit of commitment due to it's remote location. It's right up your alley:)

I posted it in this thread for a reason! The concern is not about S8 .... it is, and always will be about personal information and human behaviour. If the health system cannot control highly regulated drugs - they certainly don't deserve additional access to my records.

Will be interesting to see what the new government will do - anyone remember what's their position on this matter?

Different systems. Its like saying someone stole my money from the piggy bank so I'll never put my money elsewhere where someone can steal it like the Bank.

Nonetheless I share reasonable concerns about privacy and access restrictions. Anytime a politician tells us not the worry, my BS antenna detects BS

I just finally managed to Opt Out, after numerous frustrating attempts last year and a bit of frustration today.

I have an anecdote to pass on. I met up the other day with an acquaintance who it turned out his wife had been in hospital for nearly a year and a half. He said he was really cheesed off with the system. It ultimately transpired that his wife had had some sort of immune system attack on her bowels, which was finally fixed with some immuno-suppressant therapy - after a year and a half's worth of attempts with other steroi_ medication.

As best he could tell, the numerous Doctors and specilaists involved weren't communicating with each other during that period. I said that surely the Doctors pass notes to each other about what was going on. He said that no, that was what used to happen, but that now there was a new health records system that doctors and hospitals dutifully uploaded stuff into - but which most doctors didn't seem to subsequently access to see what had been going on.

Anyhow, those were his thoughts.
Regards,
Renato
