My Health Record

I have weighed it up and opting out. Starts with police and progresses on to others. THe police or anyone else doesnt need to check anything before they deal with me.

I think those opting in haven't weighed everything up and are naive about government promises on security and purpose.
I’m not naive on security. It’s those government agencies that have nothing to do with health management that is my concern right now.

tap tap tap... hmm, I don’t see any evidence of inoculations on your child’s Health Record...

...you will not be eligible for child care rebate.
...your child will not be admitted to this school.

Sounds like a great system actually.

There is one monumental change coming to the health section with this and nobody is talking about it! As it stands (and this is still a matter being debated behind the scenes) all pathology requests now have a little box that the Dr (or you after the Dr gives it to you!). The little tick box says do not publish to my health record. Now for the kicker, after 5 days the result will be published to your file, if left unticked. Now some might say that is great, I no longer have to go back to the Dr to get my results and yes they are about you, but the reality is that pathology is a conversation between two Drs and they have a duty of care to explain said result to you. To date I have heard nothing about changing this duty of care, which to my mind has been turned on it's head. The little box also means that your record is at best suspect or possibly useless. My health record has existed as an opt in system for 6 years now, why the need for change?

Well I for one am looking forward to having access to these test results and not having to almost beg the Dr to print them out. And will make sure that box doesn’t get ticked. As I said before I’ve been in My Health Record for a few years now, have had multiple tests, X-rays, admits, specialist tests etc and there is NOTHING in my documents. So something has to change. It’s currently useless.

Some months back, the Medical Centre I visited asked if I wanted into My Health Record. I said "No", my wife said yes and filled out a form.

Some time later, it transpired when we visited the Centre, that we were BOTH joined to My Health Record - I said "Take me off it" She said "Yes", but it didn't happen.

Which I found out today when I went through the process of Opting Out and it wouldn't let me, because I already had an account.

So to get out of it now, I have to Log into My Gov and

Step 2: Verify your identity
To link your My Health Record to your MyGov account, you will need to prove your identity as a security check.
You will be asked questions about your Medicare enrolment and claims history. These are checked with Medicare to verify your identity.
You need to answer the questions correctly to pass the identity check. If you’re not sure, can’t remember, or don’t know the answer to a question, you can skip that question and try the next one.
You may need:
>your Medicare card
>BSB and bank account number into which your Medicare benefits are paid (if you've arranged this with Medicare)
>your address as recorded by Medicare
>information about your last doctor's visit.

so that I can then do the following

Log in to your My Health Record through myGov.
1. Select the 'Profile & Settings' tab.
2. Select 'Profile' and navigate to the bottom of the page.
3. Read the information and click on ‘Cancel My Health Record’.

This is a lot of work just to opt out of something i never wanted to join in the first place.
I'll be ringing them tomorrow.
Regards,
Renato

I hear what you are saying, and yes, interpretation of pathology reports IS a matter for qualified people, but the results never-the-less are about me (in my case) and there's no less reason for me to see them than my X-rays. Consider the opposing argument. "Yes, we have these pathology results about you, but we've decided that you can't see them." No, that's not going to fly.

Well I for one am looking forward to having access to these test results and not having to almost beg the Dr to print them out. <snip>

I'm the same :). I used to graph out my blood results  and ask my GP about the trends.

Do you realise your record will stay on the system for yonks and yonks ? as i understand, presently, you can cancel the record so nothing new goes on there, but that which is already stays there until after you die.........

Yes, I know that. And I'm annoyed.

Still, if getting out stops access to them, I will be happy.
Cheers,

Isn't it 30 years after desth? By then insurers will have access and be able to track your grand kids back to you and charge for any treads they see in your family.

It's the future generations that will pay for decisions now.

something like that, or they if they don't have your date of death,, they add 130 years onto your DOB, and the file is turfed out then ?

There are many reasons why people should not see their own pathology results, which is why there is a delay built in; serious results (which can be misinterpreted) needs to be communicated in person, by your own doctor.

Everyday routine things like INR, HbA1c etc, sure, happy for patients to see that. But a HIV screen positive result, cancer, etc etc .... no.

Just found out that I've had a record since 2013 and can't opt out. Can only cancel but the record will remain.

The Minister has just announced a proposal to change the legislation to allow records to be deleted.

What a shambles.

Is there anything recorded in it other than prescriptions? Mine has nothing!

I think you underestimate patient’s ability to accept this. I would much prefer to have the information before I see the dr. Forewarned is forearmed. I have found that at times drs are loathe to tell the full story. By having the results I am in a better position to ask questions and not plunged into a stage of shock during the consultation. Besides they are my records and it is my right to have them IMO.

I’m with you. I’d far rather see the news first hand, digest it in my own time then seek assistance with treatment plans etc. If I’m at a Drs surgery I would have driven there. I’d have to drive home again with bad news. Let alone deal with my reactions in the clinic. It’s not the way I do things.

When I had to go straight to hospital from the Doctiors surgery a couple of years ago it was quite problematic getting the car out of the paid for car park I’d parked it in.

Absolutely for some people it's better. But there are many examples overseas with direct-to-consumer results where people have committed suicide over results they have misinterpreted. For the sake of 7 days, I'll definitely endorse anything that avoids that.
