It is complex, and that is why they airlines have chosen automation to do the grunt work of determining the MSC and their baggage rules.

One of the important points in this, is a clarification from Qantas on one aspect of the rules as they will apply for travel to the US. So, if you are travelling to the US, and the first marketing carrier is QF, then the baggage policies of the most significant marketing carrier will apply.

Conversely, if you first marketing carrier was FJ, then FJ rules would apply all the way through, as FJ has opted to go that way.
