Ok, the Heathrow Express is famous for being the most expensive train per km of track. However - I'm curious if this is still true considering the depreciation of the UK Pound and many other expensive public transport options being around.

So what do you think is the most expensive public transport available per metre? For purposes of this discussion, let's discount taxis and limos, but instead concentrate on mass people movers. Inclusion of tourist wheels isn't really advisable due to them being a tourist attraction only and dropping you back at the same spot. However, cable cars and other types of distance based movement methods should be included.

Sydney Monorail: $5 for 150m between the Galeries Victoria and City Centre stations on Pitt Street. A touch over $33/km.

Tourist trap off the rails on cost

At its most exorbitant point, the network charges casual commuters $4.90 to travel 150 metres between two stops on Pitt Street. A more realistic 500-metre ride between such exotic attractions as the Sydney Convention Centre and Paddy's Markets works out four times more expensive - when measure per kilometre - than a journey in a luxury cabin on the Orient Express from London to Venice.
(Fares have of course risen since that article was written in 2011).

And I think about $7 for all day unlimited travel - that works out pretty cheap.

It's currently $9.80 for the day ticket, but I will acknowledge your unstated point that I did cherry-pick my example!

The train from SYD to Central must be right up there.

It certainly leaves Heathrow Express well behind. According to a BBC story Heathrow Express is GBP1.17/mile, or AUD1.14/km. Central to Domestic in Sydney is $15.40 for 6.7km (according to Cityrail) or $2.30/km.

Mascot to Domestic Airport is $9.93/km, and Wolli Creek to International Airport is $11.85/km.

Any two stations in Sydney domestic - $3.40 min fare... eg North Sydney-Milsons Pt - about 0.4km - so $8.50/km and with no surcharge/gate fee

Unlike the buses the train doesn't have the equivalent of a MyBus1 (1-2 sections) - prepaid 10-trip fare is $16.80 so half the price.
--- its cough like this that is going to make the Opal Card problematic in Sydney

Brisbane's Airtrain isn't far behind HEX: 14.4 km from Central to International Airport. Undiscounted cost (normal) $15.50. Rate of $1.08/km.

If you have a go card, it is actually cheaper to travel to Cooloongatta Airport via train and bus compared to going to Brisbane Airport. (Without a go card it is more expensive.)

As a comparison of how the Australia has lost the plot, the Narita Express travels approximately 75 km between Tokyo and Narita airport, at a cost of JPY 2940 (including surcharge, standard class). At the current rate of exchange that equates to AUD 36.47, which yields a rate of 49c/km. And the quality of the trains (both inside and outside) between Sydney and Tokyo/Narita - completely two different worlds, in fact you'd think one of them salvaged the rolling stock from remnants of the war.

If tourist shuttles can be included, there was one which offered to take us from our hotel to reef fleet terminal, at only $16 pp. The distance is around 500 meters. So at roughly $30 per km......

I suppose Brisbane public transport does get a dishonorable mention. A one stop journey on a paper ticket will cost either $4.50 or $5.20 depending on whether you cross a zone. Granted that is a cherry picked example but it must be up there.

Melbourne has a similar issue for short trips, although the way fares are structured, the further you travel, the better value for money you get.

I would think that Melbourne does have rather expensive public transport fares generally compared to other cities in the world. They're certainly expensive given the level of service typically provided.

Anat0l. Perhaps a better example for the bne airtrain would be eagle junction to international. That's gotta be a lot higher per km...

disagree, $3.30 on myki gets you travel for between 2 to 3 hours anywhere in zone 1, and zone 1 is quite extensive (the entire tram network is included). if you use it for a 300 metre hop you still have another 2 hours use

.

I would argue that OOL is probably the cheapest airport to get to and one of the few that has public transport that drops you right at the door for no more than a standard ticket.

That was one I was going to mention. Much too expensive for me.

Reminds me of this. I'm so glad I don't have to catch trains to and from work anymore

That's because most people on trams dont pay.

Narita Express was extremely expensive.

For the distance travelled in the time given and the comfort afforded (even in second class), hell no is it expensive.

How much did you pay for yours? It should've only been about JPY 3000. Of course, had you paid that around 2008ish, I might've tended to agree with you.

Mine was even better - N'Ex use was free with my Japan Rail Pass.

That's because most people on trams dont pay.

Honesty system?

It's amazing how a lot of Europe uses an honesty system (open gate) for riding the bus, metro, tram etc.. We're a Western first world country (or so I'm lead to believe) and we can't institute such a system here without making a huge case that people will aim to evade the fare system.... How immature are we?

It only cost me 1 euro to go from BTS airport right into town  Now that's cheap! It's about a 30 minute (or more) ride, too, if I remember rightly.
