Most expensive public transport per meter?

Kangaroo Island ferry is up there - $48 for a 14km trip and if you take your car (which you need when you get there) it jumps up to $140.

Honesty system?

It's amazing how a lot of Europe uses an honesty system (open gate) for riding the bus, metro, tram etc.. We're a Western first world country (or so I'm lead to believe) and we can't institute such a system here without making a huge case that people will aim to evade the fare system.... How immature are we?
People will simply try to evade the fare at every opportunity. I see it very regularly now so what do you think it will be like under an honesty system?

Adelaide is about $2.40 maximum for a student/concession or about $4.50 for Adults - this is across all busses, trains & trams which are all publicly owned & operated except the busses are contracted out for operations. So if you really want to, you can catch the bus from the airport to the CBD for $4.50.

Not sure if OOL is cheaper or not, though that said a go card helps a lot.

Not sure of the difference between a paper ticket and a MyMulti trip in Sydney.

Actually, come to think of it, except for Darwin, all of the capital cities have buses to the airport. Only BNE and MEL have services which don't directly drop you within a stone throw of the front door.

Does T-Bus count? Drop off at all 3 front doors. ;)

I was thinking about whether to count T-Bus or not, but I wanted to keep it to public bus services (that said, yes T-Bus is free of charge). Otherwise, one could argue Skybus for MEL (not as cheap as the public service, but effective).

As it stands, so there are bus services to major airports in Australia. Probably not amongst the most expensive, thankfully.

Is the SYD domestic to international train line really only about 500 meters? I would have thought closer to 1km. That's still $5 per km, though.

Using Munich as an example. Their transport systems are much more developed and more extensive. Ticket prices can be relatively cheap due to the numbers using the system. It fact, that is a key point if Australia fare prices went down due to mass take up, of people paying the fares, that could encourage people to pay. They do have inspectors on Munich public transport. Have heard of these being little old ladies.

It is possible to travel on a long term cheap pass and with the open gates there is now swipe requirements that can slow you down. More frequent services, more compact urban areas meaning higher population density. Integrated transport modes. It is relatively harder for young people to get a car licence and there are probably less cars per capita or less used on a day to day basis. (this is entirely my assumption) But the urban setup disadvantages cars as a transport mode vs public transport = greater take up.

I suppose Brisbane public transport does get a dishonorable mention. A one stop journey on a paper ticket will cost either $4.50 or $5.20 depending on whether you cross a zone. Granted that is a cherry picked example but it must be up there.

Totally agree, I recently returned Melbourne and found the daily pass at $7.30 to be amazing value.
