More delays for Qantas

YET another delay to the delivery of Boeing's new 787 Dreamliner aircraft has raised concerns that Qantas will have to keep its fleet of ageing 767 planes in service for longer.

Qantas will find out shortly the extent of what will become the seventh delay to Boeing's troubled 787 program, after the manufacturer determined the cause of an electrical fire on a test aircraft two weeks ago.

At this rate will some aircraft require a refit or will Boeing supply cheap alternatives such as airbus did when they were in delivery breach?

I think refit understates the condition of a few of the 767's on the fleet. It would be interesting to know the number of rotations on some of them AC. Which also then makes me wonder why the older the AC, the more short flights are placed on them meaning more takeoffs and landings toward the and of its life.

If you apply a simple bathtub curve theory, these AC have well past the early infant mortality failure rate, well toward the end of the constant failure rate if not on the upward curve of the increasing failure rate...

Boeing/Qantas will need to do something methinks rather than refitting old AC. A refit may replace electronics, engines and major hydraulic components, it does not replace the aged wiring, or the fatigued metal on the AC.

To balance out cycles (takeoffs and landings) and total hours. Various components have numbers for both. In a perfect world both would be a the allowable limit at the same time. The 737(?) that lost its top in Hawawii had very high cycles but low hours. QF have the routes so can balance out hours & cycles

I think that QANTAS should have ordered more A330's and retired some of the 767's. With an "average" age approaching 20 years they are far from cutting edge!

I am also surprised they seem to have turned their back on Boeing 747's. Is there not a 747 800 around now or soonish?

Air Pacific have newer 747's than QANTAS.

Does anyone know when QANTAS took delievry of its' newest 747 a all?

I don't think they planned to get as many of the A330's as they have now!

Getting more may be a contingency plan for them!

The newest are less than 10 years old (early 2000's delivery). Have to wait and see what replaces them down the track.

From this website. QFlyer - Qantas Fleet the newest 747-400ERs are between 7 and 8 years old delivered between 2002 and 2003.

With the problems with the A380s then a few 767s including the 767-336 which one don't know QF598, that I was on yesterday are flying slightly longer runs than they are usually flying.

My flight SIN-PER on Monday night was on VH-OGB a 22 year old 767, that was more likely to be flying domestic runs.

And to think I was hoping to fly one of these back in Aug 2008.

Oh, well I'll have to keep holding my breath!

Can someone confirm that the FJ 747 is ex Ansett??

Yes agree Nick.

While QF do have 3 as 1989' the majority of theirs are 90's.

I am not sure if the FJ birds got a internal refit with their last Major overhaul in Singapore

Does anyone know how long it takes for Airbus on receiving and order to ready for first commercial flight for say an A320 or A330?

I feel ill!!

The few times I've flown FJ I have consoled myself by keeping on thinking that the planes were relatively new. :-( Now I realise they were "new to the fleet".

OMG WTF

Reggie can never feel comfortable flying them again.

Reggie will need a few whiskeys next time!!

I think well maintained though mate in aus and Singapore, and impeccable previous owners

Oh Spruce..... A Few would be the understatement of the year!

I have often thought that my end would come like this......

"All pax were evacuated from the aircraft safely without injury...... Except for the drunken guy in row 1 who was too drunk to undo his seatbelt"
