Moderating

It is pleasing and also humbling that we do have some members who understand our task of Moderation and have taken the time to thank us for the uneviable job we share.

It is a two way street, the AFF Board would not be what it is today without its members as well as its management team (Moderators, support and admin). Neither group can survive well without the other - symbiotic, I think it's called ;).

For those discussing the correct english word above, pauly7 was on the money :D

I have learnt more about FF this year than in the last 40 years of business travel, all from this forum.

It is mostly due to the Mods ensuring that posts are relevant and in line with Admin's aims and principles.

To achieve this, their knowledge and experience are invaluable.

Because we are all different and we all have different views they must step a fine line to ensure we play the ball and not the man. We all want freedom of speech but not cencorship.

Their job is to find that happy medium and I do not envy that task.

For this I thank them.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

AFF Supporters can remove this and all advertisements

Fear not, my Strunk & White is well thumbed. Irony was intended there - check Samh's post

And of course, great appreciation for the job of Moderators, some of whom I might get to meet in real life one day

Cheers skip

I also think the moderators are fulfilling a great role. If being a Mod resulted in relinquishing the right to post.......well, who would want to do the role!

AFF, stands proud amongst it's peers and I believe a fair proportion of that is down to the Mods:cool:

Love it!

How about Flyertalk, I wonder?

How about Flyertalk, I wonder?

From what I've seen some forums are managed quite differently on FT. Stepping out of line seems to be welcomed with a little toe chopper work......then decapitation.

AFF, seem to allow a far longer leash therefore, a thread can twist & turn in all sorts of directions but comes back OT fairly quickly.

I think keeping every thread always on topic can stifle the usual Aussie larrakin in us - but we like it to come back onto topic before we forget what it is all about

One FT forum (coincidentally the one that would likely be of most interest to Aussies) is moderated with almost military precision. I can predict which threads there will be closed instantly because they don't fit the mod's view, posts that criticise one side of politics are deleted while similar criticisms of the other side are tolerated, even encouraged, and god help you if you side with workers when it comes to issues of industrial action (by either workers or management).

I think part of the problem with that forum is a that it's a one-man-band, whereas other fora there have teams of moderators and so are answerable to each other. One forum that I read there should have zero interest for me, Travel with Children, but I follow it because the moderation team make it a joy to read.

When I've had issues on AFF they've been addressed quickly and fairly by a mod. On FT my experience has been stony silence, even when I've pointed out posts that blatantly break their ToS. Moderation here seems a lot more consistent throughout.

I've probably been too blunt here for this board, my apologies if so.

Hey BadgerBoi,where did you get that flea I can see on my IPAD??

From staying in a cheap motel - I was downgraded from the Bedbug Suite, all they had left was that flea :D

(Stole it from the fake Godwin Gretch on Twitter. It works better there because the background is a better match)

Sometimes with some strong guidance!!

I know i am guilty of going OT from time to time....but hey when you are on a roil....

Some threads head so far off-topic they never have a chance to come back on-topic yet still continue to exist!

I actually don't mind people waffling on and on about topics that do not interest me. ;) Add a little fun to an otherwise boring life....

Not sure if I can sy the same about moderation done in excess:)

Cheers skip

I would like sometimes to see the mods suspend or cancel certain members accounts once they start to get way off topic and attack fellow members with very little regard for actual facts.

You can voice a different opinion but as long as you don't be little there reasoning.

[Mod Hat]
In the context of the previous issues with this thread, I have removed some recent off-topic posts. I know we are generally lenient when it comes to off-topic banter, but given this thread's history, lets try to remain on-topic in this thread.

Here is a serious suggestion. When a moderator believes a contributer has gone too far they should move their post in its entirerity (NOT edit it) and provide a link in its place. The link takes you to the graveyard of spurned posts with a suitable warning to abandon all pretence of politeness and tolerance if you wish to proceed. Then the bickering can continue off to the side and the original thread can proceed with decorum.

[I should confess up front that I have been smacked down in this thread for some off-hand comment that I can't even remember and did not see the presumably offended reply and am now totally confused and disconsolate about this whole thread.]

The action taken will depend on the nature of the inappropriate content posted. Sometimes we contact the poster and request that they edit their own post. Other times we may remove the entire post and any others quoting the offending post. Another option is to just redact the offending portion of the post if the remaining content of the post adds value to the thread.

I do not see any benefit in moving offending posts to a publicly viewable area (graveyard as you call it) - even with such a warning about it content. That would be like establishing a "box ring" forum and throwing it own to all sorts of abuse and offensive posts (and lots of spam). I do not see that such a forum would be positive for AFF or its members.
