Too late! You are already on the way and you can't turn the aircraft around. Make all necessary phone calls at your destination. The person that cancelled the conference can also inform your boss and all other conference delegates.

It was my boss's boss that cancelled the conference ;) There were some other parties involved and it would have been good to advise them of the changes

Simon, I find a lot of things annoying. Have patience. Someone slower than others is unfortunate and part of life. Mobile phones are not. There is an overwhelming objection to mobile phone use on aircraft. For a change I hope the majority, and not the loud minority, have their way on this one.

I need to have patience - well you need to have tolerance of other people needs/wants - you cant have it both ways. We cant have an abitrary list of things that we are tolerant of and things that we aren't when it comes to normal every day behaviour.

Its interesting - there have been two comments that refer to "silent majority" getting their way - I actaully am seeing that its a very loud group that are banging the drum not to have mobiles operating on planes - there are few vocal people who dont care either way (I dont care and will mostly have myphone off - I just dont like being told that because someone else finds it annoying that I cant use my phone) and very silent majority who have given no opinion on the matter...

can you provide this data/evidence? i would like to see the evidence/data for this claim.

cheers

I seem to recall the results of one or three such surveys indicating most respondents as being against it.

However, as I have already posted, I believe Qantas did their own survey and found a similar result (i.e. big time against Voice calls). Otherwise it is certain there would have been voice calls included in the pilot program.

The costs of implementing a combined SMS/Voice system would not be much different from the SMS one Qantas are doing.

I'll try and track it down, but I remember a year or so back there was an FCC survey of (lots of people). Something around the 10% mark supported voice calls, and around 60% supported SMS.

oz_mark,

NM has just started a new Poll.

...and I have voted. And while I support that idea, surveys conducted by (or on behalf of) the FCC are likely to have some rigour around the survey process that would be more likely to satisfy some of those on this board.

No need for me to provide any evidence.

Just have a sticky beak at every single poll that has been conducted on this subject. You will find the results overwhelming against the use of mobile phones on aircraft.

Simon, I know it may sound like I complain a lot but I am very tolerant. Actually I think I am more tolerant than most people on this forum.

I have seen too many considerate self centred people overuse mobile phones. They actually think they are cool. They actually think they are important. They actually think that other people give a damn about their work/social life.

Somehow I feel that I will not have much to worry about regularly flying economy as the majority of considerate self centred mobile phone users will be sitting up the front of the aircraft.

Logic suggests otherwise.

I think John might have meant inconsiderate?

I find it funny that in a country with such high mobile phone penetration that people seem to hate them so much. I just find them a convenient tool - but I like to be able to contact who I want when I want for whatever reason I want - that's why I have bluetooth headset (good for on trains so I dont have to talk too loud and people can hear me), skype, msn, blackberry - its not to be cool its just so that whenever I want to be in contact I can.

There are times when due to multiple timezones of multiple family members and work colleagues on multiple continents and multiple time zones within continents that having a call on a plane or being able to text would just be convenient. I dont understand the pathological loathing for other people's convenience.

It seems its alright to dictate what one person can do byt denying them use of their mobile phone - but can I prod the snorer? spray the farter? slap the misbehaving child? gag the drunk businessman on an op-up? It just seems that because you can impact this annoyance without having to interact with the person you are affecting that its easier to shout that something should not be allowed.

I have a work associate who just can't help yelling into his mobile phone. (When on a call of course :p ) And, he does not even know he is doing it; gets very surprised (and apologetic) if it's mentioned. We also commute on the same suburban train line and he does this there as well.

Traveling with him can be a real Pain; Late morning yesterday, while taxing after landing in MEL, he proceeded to regale his offsider at the office and anyone within 15' of our activities at SYD from 5:30am that morning and related issues.

He is not a mobile Junkie; does not complain about having to turning his mobile off during a flight, it's just that he is LOUD!.

Oh, well ... since he approves my claims/timesheets/invoices I'll just have to live with it. :-|

Taxiing to the terminal or from the airport?

If it's the former, I suggest that he is a mobile junkie and one full of self importance. Surely it could wait a few more minutes till he got into the terminal? This would be a fine example of why voice calls shouldn't be implemented. Imagine hearing all that on a long haul flight. Aircraft are small enough as it is.

No, I meant considerate. Most self centred peole using mobile phones in enclosed environments think they are being considerate when in fact they are annoying the hell out of most people. YMMV!

Hunted around and can find a couple of references to the survey (although it does seem to have been 2 years ago - oh well, time flies :) )

Frome here:
newswireless.net .:. PR releases .:. IDC survey finds market for cell phone ...
Only 11% of 50,000 respondents indicated that they are in favour of cell phone use for voice calls on planes, whether in unlimited or designated calling areas. However, 64% of respondents approved of passengers using their mobile phones in-flight for activities other than voice calls.

and from The Register!
Airline passengers love inflight SMS, hate voice calls | The Register

The ban on mobile phones on airplanes may soon be lifted, but most people are opposed to their use in-flight for voice calls.

That's according to a worldwide survey by IDC which indicated that far from supporting a lifting of the ban by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the US, a number of consumer groups claim the use of mobile phones on board airplanes would disturb passengers. Only 11 per cent of the 50,000 respondents would support the use of mobile phones for voice calls while on board an airplane

While the majority of respondents would not approve of passengers making voice calls during flights, some 64 percent of respondents indicated their approval of using mobile phones for data services such as SMS. Of the 11 specified wireless activities, in-flight messaging emerged as the most popular choice among respondents.
