I am tempted by the 100% free promotion but is there an expiry on the usdm ?

Year and a half is it?? Seems to be about the standard period for airline miles... But then they will be converting to AA miles at some point probably within that period...

I think you can keep all of them refreshed with account activity

To keep your membership active, you must use or earn miles within a consecutive 18-month period, or your miles may be forfeited. You earn mileage credits when you fly, and miles are considered redeemed when an award is ticketed. You may reinstate forfeited miles for an additional 18 months for a fee*:

There is a [whopping] USD9 fee to have your miles extended for another 18 months should you be in that position. You call USDM and pay the fee and you're good to go again :)

(the $9 is payable prior to miles expiry... and applies to the total miles... not 'per 1000' or anything. Reinstating miles after they have expired however is a very costly exercise)

Sad to say but some of miles will be expiring soon. What is the easiest and cheapest way to keep my USDM's fresh now that AA have taken over?

As you say, these are now AA points, subject to AA's terms and conditions. There's a dedicated thread on keeping AA miles alive in the AA forum (too many options to list here).
