Middle East Airspace Diversions/Cancellations

An article in 'The Oz' highlights how the USA Department of State is flagging the possibility of “possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures and potential travel disruptions” in respect of the Middle East.

Two Australian domiciled tourism lecturers are quoted.

One basically says don't travel via the Middle East: too risky, because the USA has threatened to attack Iran's Pickaxe Mountain, which if carried out would probably result in Iran retaliating with attacks on USA military bases in Gulf nations.

The second has no concerns, saying that airspace is open and flights don't take off unless airlines believe it's safe.

Divergent opinions. A quandary for travellers.

I read that article. I think the second opinion doesn't really address the risk that the airspace is closed at a moment's notice and your flight is diverted to some other random airport that takes days to recover from.

This, to my mind, is a much greater risk than an aircraft or airport being directly hit.

I thought the recovery time from diversion airports was pretty quick last time around? They bussed crews in so minimal disruption?

Everyone's personal risk appetite is obviously different. I personally would not travel anywhere near this region at the moment- the thought of getting hit by some stray missile or, not quite that bad but still, getting stuck in Doha for extended periods of time is just too much for me to enjoy Caviar and champagne on board. But I'm generally a worry wuss and work in insurance so there's that.

Well we have a new grandbaby arriving in mid November, so the usually cautious and risk averse Seats will be heading to the UAE as planned on 23 November. I’ve checked our insurance and we will be covered for medical etc not related to the war so it’s a risk I am going to accept, much to my own surprise!
