Just discovered a little wrinkle in MH's upgrade processes.

They sent me an email to say my upgrade bid had been successful, but when they tried to charge my credit card (all unbeknown to me) the bank declined the charge. Well, of course they did. The card had expired, and as a result I lost the upgrade.

Why didn't MH contact me first to confirm which credit card I wanted to use. Most sensible airlines would.

A trap for old and young players.

The same thing happened to me earlier this year.

Was successful in being upgraded but my bank rejected MAS's attempt to charge by card. Was notified about this by MAS via email and was allowed to enter another card details manually.

I must admit I was lucky to have checked my email not long after MH notified me and acted immediately for fear of missing out.

You have to provide credit card details when you bid for the upgrade. I just make sure that my card's expiry date is after my last flights on the booking I've bid on.

Well, that's a lesson I've now learnt. But, as often happens, the hand of fate came to my rescue (so to speak) and gave me an economy class section that was quite empty, leaving me with 3 seats to myself. And I saved the $75 upgrade fee and business class was packed. And the nice hostie gave me personal service because of my OWE status. So not too bad in the end.

Hi All,

I was invited to bid for an upgrade on MH433 this coming Wednesday from HKG-KUL. I bid the maximum of $270 and am yet to receive confirmation of an upgrade. I was informed that if I was successful I would receive confirmation 48 hours before the flight which has been and gone without an email from them. Expert flyer is showing 4 J seats available at this stage. Is all hope lost? Has anyone received confirmation of the upgrade after the 48 hour cut off?

Cheers,

Steve

Check whether your credit card's been charged, Steve. If it has, you've been upgraded. Their email confirmation can be a bit slow sometimes.

No charges as yet so not looking good. Seems strange that they've still got 4 J seats showing available on EF. I guess they must be confident that they'll sell them!

My flight (SIN-KUL) in about a week's time is showing very empty on EF in both J and Y but the minimum has gone up to $SG90. Still no.

Happy wandering

Perth to Kl this week successful @ $275. As reported here the cc debit preceeded the email.

I'm thinking about flying MH as part of a Oneworld Award trip. Can I bid for upgrades on an award ticket?

Thanks

Had an upgrade bid for a SYD-KUL flight confirmed via email (before the credit card was charged) at T-75! I was surprised by this because the cut-off time to modify or cancel any bids is at T-72!
Anyway, really looking forward to trying out their new J seat (and I'm booked in 1A) for the very first time. Can't wait!

Are there any restrictions in booking class for MHupgrade eligibility? I just booked KUL-SIN in Q, even if it's only a 1 hour flight at the prices that MH seem to be offering for MHupgrade I'd be interested in upgrading just to tour the lounge and whatnot. It's been 3 days since I booked and no offer email as yet, and the website also claims that I'm not eligible, but I'm wondering whether I should wait until closer to the date.

I'm not sure to be honest. I do know that my last MH flight was in a zero earning booking classed and I got offered an upgrade, it was accepted too which was nice.

I had multiple attempts to persuade me to upgrade my O class SIN-KUL.
Failed as I already had lounge access.

Happy wandering

If you've got lounge access on short flights anyway, I don't think it's worth it to be honest. For me though, I did a status run recently with 4 flights in two separate 24 hour periods. Four in business so they were fine, but the four in economy were all offered up[grades, three accepted. The lounge access alone made it worthwhile for me.

Hello ajd,

I remember coming across an article from AusBT regarding booking class eligibility.

"MAS allows points upgrades from Y, B, H, K, M, L, V, S, N and Q economy fare types . However, if the first letter is O, G, P, U, I, E, X, T or anything else, you won’t be able to upgrade using points this time around."

Hope this helps!
