MEL-KUL, success - minimum bid was $305 - bid $350 - 5 spare seats in J
KUL-HKT, success - minimum bid was $70 - bid $80 - only 4 pax in J
HKT-KUL, success - minimum bid was $65 - bid $80 - only 7 pax in J
KUL-MEL, success - minimum bid was $290 - bid $350 - revised bid $400 (was advised by MH to revise bid due to many MHupgrade requests) - 3 spare seats in J

I've had three successful MHUpgrades of three bids in September.
MEL-KUL minimum bid made A$300 (70% full on departure)
KUL-PAR minimum bid made A$880 (almost full J cabin on departure)
KUL-MEL minimum bid made A$300 (65% full on departure)

When you say 3 spare seats in J if you only bid $290 would you have success with the upgrade??

My bid was $350, and I was asked to revise bid. At $290, I doubt I would of had success.

I put in a minimum bid return for Adelaide -KL KL-Bangkok minimum bid is $300Au and $95Au.Although I have paid for the exit seat Ad-KL return I would really like the Kl -Adelaide night flight with a upgrade.
Any tips on what to bid.(The return flight is a Monday 16 November)

You can update your bids up to 72 hours before flight. I would check the passenger loads. The more spare seats, the more chance your bids will be accepted. Expertflyer is good for this.

SYD-KUL 16/09, No luck. Chockers but day time flight with bulkhead was perfect.
KUL-HKT 17/09, success - minimum bid was $75 - bid $75 - only 2 pax in J which was myself and girlfriend.
HKT-KUL 25/09, success - minimum bid was $75 - bid $75 - only 4 pax in J which included myself and girlfriend
KUL-MEL 25/09, success - minimum bid was $400 - bid $450 - no spare seats in J. Got 1A & 1B. Girlfriend first time in med haul J thought she was in heaven and slept the entire time the seat belt sign was off. Me not so much in heaven as their beds just don't stack up against QF, CX, etc. Used Chef on call which was OK.
The golden lounge needs serious work to get anywhere near its OW partners, its just not good. No hot water in showers...

The golden lounge needs serous work to get anywhere bear its OW partners, its juts not good.

How long has it been open? Was there on Monday and not hot water in the showers.. same problem in June. The fact they don't have international power points baffles me too.

I dread anything more than a 2hr layover at KUL.

Is the hot water problem in the J or F lounge? I've never had any problems in the F lounge in KUL.

Assume this was the large lounge in the satellite terminal. Seriously underwhelming. Regional lounge in main terminal is slightly better, never had a problem with hot water there.

Yep, ist the satellite terminal lounge. Agree the regional lounge is much better in all ways, food, bathrooms, hot water etc.

Does everyone with a bid submitted get an email closer to the departure date, urging you to raise your bid ("Malaysia Airlines - Increase Your Chances of Being Upgraded")
or is this a genuine indication that your current bid is not going to be successful? This is for a KUL-SYD flight.
Also, how useful is SeatAlerts by expertflyer? If a flight shows half of all business class seats as available 5 days before departure, is that a good sign?
Similarly, if Economy shows 70% empty, does that simply mean that many travelers have not selected their seats yet (MH charges you to select a seat so I guess most people can't be bothered) or should this be a true representation of how full the flight is going to be?

I also wait for your questions answer. When minimum upgrade bid is $300 and you do not get a upgrade yet there are spare business class seats seems fishy to me.

There's nothing "fishy" about it -- you have no entitlement to an upgrade, just a chance of being granted one. The airline decides whether it would like the tiny revenue from your bid or if it would prefer to leave the seat empty.

I think everyone gets the email urging you to increase your chances.

I watched the availability very carefully on my four flights recently. What matters most is the actual numbers in each business class booking category (e.g. J4 C4 D0 Z0 I0). It doesn't seem to matter if Z and I are zero, but the others will be more of an indicator (the maximum number of "open" seats in each of these categories is 4). What is not a reliable indicator is the seatmap, which you might feel tempted to use as your reference. Malaysia Airlines doesn't appear to pre-allocate seats in its system, so any passenger in economy or business who hasn't requested a seat will not be reflected in the seat map until very close to departure. 70% empty seats is unfortunately meaningless. Again, the best guide is the booking category (maximum seats shown is 9 per category).
