I have some flights booked on MH later this year. The fares are discount economy (Q). From what I can see in the Qantas earn tables there are no points or SC earned if I use my QFF, is that right? I have QF PS + paid QC membership. Am I better off adding my QFF number to the booking (for what minimal benefits OWR entitles me to) or joining MH Enrich and crediting there? Thanks in advance.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

So according to OW website, all you'll get will be business check in and advanced seat selection (assuming no standby will be necessary). You may find you will get these benefits just by waving your PS card (if they're indeed checked at all when you go to the priority check in).

You could always tag your QFF number to select advanced seats (if you can indeed to this on MH), and then change the crediting to enrich from the QP. No point crediting to QFF as you'll get nothing (queue wonka 'you get nothing' meme).

While you won't get many, you might be able to boost using Amex MR (pointhacks talk this up quite a bit). Better something than nothing. I have 5k points sitting around from a similar trip to KL a few years back.

Thanks. I added my QFF number at the time of booking and it was going to charge me to select seats (I was NB at the time). I'm not sure how to go about selecting the seats now. I've tried the 'manage my booking' on the MH site but it looks like the seat selection is only available at booking or when OLCI opens 48 hours prior to departure. I also see in the FAQ that Enrich Platinum (OWE) and Gold (OWS) have to pay for preferred seat selection, which doesn't seem right and makes me think I'd be up for a fee as well (http://www.malaysiaairlines.com/au/en/plan/book/select-favourite-spot.html).

That's odd, while I don't have MH experience recently (was able to select free seats as NB in 2012) Most OW carriers allow you to select seats in advance. Could be worth calling MH if you are extremely keen for a particular seat.

With MH in Economy your OW status does not allow you free seat selection unfortunately.
So I would just credit to Enrich if you are going to be doing enough flights on MH to make it worthwhile. Otherwise if this is a once off, then you may as well leave your QFF # in the booking even though there is no points at least you should get your minimal OW benefits without needing your card.

I had to pay seat selection fee on MH as a owe. Given the cheap MH awards I'd suggest crediting to enrich.

OWE here.

My MH bookings in Y need MYR20 to secure a seat. This has been the case for a long tme and as recent as a week ago it was still the case.

The oneworld Emerald benefits say:

Preferred seating (where offered)

So in reality, if the airline does not offer it (like MH) you don't get it.

I should also add that if booked in Business your seat selection is free, however OW status doesn't give you any better (or worse for that matter) selection of seats. Also be aware with MH that once seats are selected at time of booking you cannot change them online, a call is required to make a change, choose carefully at the start.

I'd credit to Enrich to get the points. You'll get nothing on QFF. Just show your PS card and you'll get the various OW benefits that you're entitled to. Seat selection in Y has not been free for a number of years now and selection in all classes can only be done at time of booking. Further changes can only be done on the phone.
Oh, and AndrewL, joining Enrich will give you a bonus 1000 Enrich miles too.

How about crediting to AAdvantage?

N O Q fares all earn nothing on AA. All economy fares on MH will earn more points accruing to MH than AA, unless having status with AA and getting a status bonus. But on the burn side, whilst often awards require less miles on MH Enrich than AA, they have a lot more surcharges.

Also, on the seat allocation side - OW Ruby & Sapphire are definitely not entitled to free seat allocation in economy, prior to check in opening it will cost $20. There is anecdotal evidence that OWE can get free seat allocation (my partner certainly did on recent trips), but unclear if that was due to having OWE or that he booked through a travel agent (expedia) and already had allocated seats. Could allocate exit rows. Best way to allocate seats for free - wait until check in opens at T-48 or originally make booking via TA!

Recently had 1 MH domestic flight in Economy both myself and wife are OWE, we had to pay for our seat selection, so I would say that you probably got your seats due to booking through a TA (we booked directly through MH website).

We had 5x MH Business class flights that month and you do get free seat selection when booked in J, just not in economy.

MH charges for Y seating for bookings via their site. If you booked via their call centre or via a travel agent/OTA seat selection is free (but you need to call up). Status does not get you preferential seating - bulkheads for example are free for all.

Not always in my experience. You get randomly allocated in Y if you book via a travel agent (online or not), if you've requested window or aisle seats. If you booked on their website and then ring up their call centre to allocate seats, they'll tell you there are charges for booking seat allocations.

I would definitely credit to Enrich, given the minimal benefits that OWR provides.

The ability to buy reward seats with points and (no minimum) miles means that you can extract some value. The points needed are a fraction of those needed for QF/VA. There is quite a high carrier charge which means that Economy redemptions not good value but Business is excellent. There are also periodic sales (just missed one) which can sometimes stretch the value.

They do expire however. If not a regular MH flyer can top up with Amex, Westpac Altitude and other OneWorld flights.

Re the question of which card to credit mile too, this is a frequent problem I have with MH tickets.
I book with QFF number and check in, once I see the confirmed ticket class I ask them to change to Enrich if its a non QF earner (sometimes gets unusual looks from check in staff).
You can still access the lounge, etc even with the enrich number on your boarding pass. Sometimes it still carrries the one world level class across.

Re the seat allocation, MH don't give them for free and you have to pay. They often don't have forward seats left empty at check in so better to pay to be sure on a long haul flight.
