Am I correct to assume this implies it took the northern route over Asia rather than the southern one, which would have been primarily over water?

Why go to so much trouble to avoid tracking as they turned back if only to fly a/c out into the Indian Ocean? My thoughts are the intention was to land somewhere.

If the assumption is the plane was going to be used for something, or held for ransom, then it would have taken the northern route. If it was a pilot suicide or attempt to make Malaysia look foolish by crashing it where it's unlikely to be found, then the southern route.

REPORTS OF LUGGAGE FOUND

Unconfirmed media reports are claiming that suitcases have been found floating in the Straits of Malacca, between Malaysia and Indonesia.

But presumably the fact that it was not picked up by radar doesn't mean anything if the story I linked to a few minutes ago is accurate?

I would not put too much credence on the terrain masking theory, a 777 could not be flown low and fast enough for it to work I imagine. it would also require knowledge of every radar, given many are mobile, that's unlikely.

Yes, although I suspect they will request and task as many P8 Poseidons as they can get from the US in addition to the P3s as they will cover the larger area a lot quicker.

Apart from those two aircraft, there is not much else up for the job available, after transit time most other types would very likely have minimal on station or search time to offer.

Wow! That's all I could think when I saw the image. Fancy if a bunch of amateur super-sleuths have solved the mystery?

It would be interesting to know water depth at this location to really determine if the image could be the missing a/c. The image appears to be on it's side suggesting a depth of no more than say 15m if the wings were missing. So where are the wings? If it is possible to see the tail still attached, then where is the tail wing (horizontal stabiliser)? You would imagine if the ail was clearly visible then the tail wing would be protruding above the water.

Whatever the outcome it is amazing how many loopholes in so many processes and technologies have been exposed by this incident.

There will be a lot of work to do in the coming months...

While I think there is a a good chance the pilot was involved in some way, there is something deeply troubling in my view with those sectors of the press who were two days ago making a big deal about how you can't trust anything the Malaysians politicians tell you. being so prepared to suddenly swing and take the view that a supporter of the opposition must be a fanatic. There are many people in both Malaysia and the western world who think this trial was always extremely suspect and politically motivated by those who did not like the fact that Anwar Ibrahaim rocked the boat in Malaysian politics.

From the reporting the last week you'd think many in the west might be somewhat supportive of the notion that things are wrong in the ruling elite in Malaysia but such is our desperation to find a scapegoat that we are immediately willing to accept this tagging of Captain Shah without (as yet) a huge amount of real evidence. The Malaysian leaders are no doubt rubbing their hands that we have diverted our attention from them so easily!

As noted at the start I do think there is a strong possibility the pilot WAS involved but lets read the press with a grain of salt and in particular the one this line originally came from.

That would be one of the more tasteful ones.

We all have our views about timing and appropriateness but clearly some part of society thinks it's ok, or finds it a useful coping mechanism, judging by the number of 'likes' I have seen.
