Flew back from SIN yesterday on QF and was pleasantly surprised to see metal knives are back on the meal trays.

The design is as expected, just a metal version of the current Marc Newson plastic thing. The blade may be a little shorter, but nothing noticable.

Yea I saw these knives at SYD yesterday in the lounge. Also saw for the first time a hot breakfast buffet with scrambled eggs, baked beans, mushrooms, etc.

I had them on the last couple of flights I did in J - domestic. and saw them in the J lounge a couple of weeks ago.

We were joking about the novelty of it all!

Yet when I flew SYD-PER in J on Tuesday we still had plastic.

I guess they are using up old stock before rolling out the new metal ones.

You may still see plastic knifes up until February next year, in particular on Perth flights.

It's not speculation, was part of the memo regarding metal knifes and made point of the fact that Perth may see plastic knifes longer as well as across the tasman.

But they may also appear on any flight until February.

No reason was give but fair to assume that it is probably to exhaust the existing supply of plastic knifes. Perhaps may have something to do with the delivery. Supplies have reached the east coast and the west coast is still waiting for the shipment (Because Qantas generally sends everything by sea when distributing supplies)

Hallelujah!

In SYD F lounge for first time on 18th Nov and the plastic certainly was at odds with the rest of that fantastic lounge. Travelled on QF11 in F that day, and when the plastic came out just assumed it was "security"

However flying around US since then and observed AA back to metal so can only conclude bought the plastic in BULK  and it has taken a while for the stock to run down

...observed AA back to metal...

I've flown AA several times over the last few years and have never seen plastic knives in F/J class - don't know if they changed to plastic after 911, but certainly for the last 4 years at least they've had metal.

So recent experiences:

SYD J: Metal knives.
SYD F: Plastic
CBR J: Plastic
MEL J: Plastic

WLG-MEL today in J had plastic knives with the meal, but when I accepted the offer of a cheese plate I was given a metal knife to go with it.

So getting there... slowly...

I think it was an interpretation of the Regulations by QF Security that led to QF having platic and AA having metal. The Regulations haven't changed recently, just the interpretation.

The regulations changed late last year - just taken a while for Qantas to make any change. Probably had a lot of plastic knives in stock (or contracted to buy).

Thanks oz_mark. I thought that was the case but didn't want to put my foot in as I could not verify.

A report from last christmas

PASSENGERS are now allowed to carry knitting needles, nail clippers and tennis racquets on board flights under new laws which came into force on Christmas Day.

Metal cutlery will also return for in-flight meals, bringing Australian standards in line with those in the United States and Europe, federal Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said in a statement.

Last year? BA have been using metal between LHR, JFK, MIA, BOS for a few years. Their FA's have told me that Qantas had a huuuge stock of plakky knives and were determined to use them up.

Go figure - If LHR/JFK isn't terrorist heaven, I don't know what is.

I doubt that BA flights between LHR, JFK, MIA, BOS are bound by Australian regulations. Neither do I think a BA FA would have a clue how many plastic knives Qantas has.
