Now replied, above.

Note that this is not a train booking site, we are a frequent flyer forum, which sometimes includes other topics, such as this thread about trains.

We can’t book, or give you availability, but if you call the number above, which is NSW trains, they’ll look after you.

I haven't travelled myself on a long distance NSW train since late last year, but the disruption advisory for the cancellation of last night's overnight Melbourne - Sydney train, due to the XPT having broken down a few hours earlier, caught my eye:

CLK622 Cancelled

Details
Due to an operational issue CLK622 is cancelled. No alternate transport can be provided. Customers are advised to make their own travel arrangements. Customers are entitled to a refund for this journey.

It's rather blunt compared to how airlines, including even low cost airlines, handle similar disruptions.

Yes, this is a lower cost State Railway entity.

The XPT's are getting very long in the tooth, and break down fairly often (I was on one several years ago that couldn't go any further than Albury, so we were all bussed to MEL).

If you need to be somewhere at a certain time don't go NSW Trainlink (or give yourself a day or two leeway).
