Melbourne to Sydney by overnight XPT train

I wonder if they will even run overnight trains when the new regional rail trains get delivered with no sleeper cabins.

Meanwhile in Europe there are some fairly innovative new ideas like capsule hotel style pods, and seats that are pretty similar to airline business sleepers.

Ohh I watch a you tube video last night on a train pod bed

Given the XPT had several hundred seats and only 20 of them are sleepers I’d say yes. Infrastructure issues in Brisbane also dictate when the standard gauge services can access Roma Street.

Don’t need to go quite as far as Europe for the seats similar to airline business seats, the railbeds that are used on the Spirit of Queensland are of that ilk as well.

I have no idea, but I expect the Melbourne-Sydney service schedule will continue exactly how it is now. It's a pretty important link for the country towns particularly Albury and north of it.

The issue with the new trains is - each car is powered by it's own underfloor diesel engine. (like the Explorer trains which run to Canberra for example)

Under floor engines give off noise and vibration to the passenger compartment.

Any one travelling on the new trains I would suggest a daylight run.

The timetable is still expected to have overnight services once the XPT's depart but you won't feel the smooth cruising of a air ride suspension passenger car with the engine at the front (and back).

There is already trouble brewing on a number of fronts, these trains brought to by the same politician that bought the new ferries that don't fit under bridges and the new 400 seat Manly ferries to replace the 1000 seat Freshwater class.

To compensate to some extent the new trains are bi-mode so will use the overhead electrical supply to Broadmeadow (N), Lithgow (W) and Macarthur (SW).

Personally I don't think it compensates anything, a 900km to Melbourne with the first 50 under the wires, 900km to Brisbane with 150 under the wires and Dubbo 400km with 80 under the wires.

Any benefit is offset by the fact the maintenance centre for the new rollingstock is at Dubbo with the Sydneham (Sydney) XPT service center to be closed and no doubt sold off. So any car needing work on say the Melbourne service or Brisbane service will be put on the Dubbo train to go there for maintenance.

Yep I know - which shows the issue of our lack of rail infrastructure - electrification should be much more widespread.

There are far more pressing issues with the interstate freight network that need sorting well before any kind of OHLE rollout. I dont think it should ever really be considered.

It's just a shame there's not enough infrastructure to support a modest average speed of 130km/h. You could then avoid overnight trains. Two trains, 7am-14:30, then 15:30-23:00...

Yep, hence why I've never done CBR-MEL by train!

I've been loving the high-speed trains in Europe lately. Absolutely no comparison to what we have in Australia.
Do we have more recent reply about travelling from Melbourne to Sydney return as Elders. I am about to do the trip with my husband staying in Sydney for 5 days and returning on the train to Melbourne

I want to book the XPT train From Melbourne to Sydney for two seniors and a return from Sydney from to Melbourne 5 days later on the XPt Train to Melbourne

I do not have the exact dates at the moment I just need to have the costs of a trip from Melbournen to Sydney and return trips Sleeper Car to travel to and from.

As long as reasonably mobile, there won't be any problem, go 1st class on a daylight service. On board staff I've found to be excellent.

An issue with overnight sleeper by yourself is if that train is popular you could end up with another person in with you, including top bunk bed. If daylight train there obviously not a problem. Each two rooms share a bathroom.

Just keep communications simple.
Simply its a "Sleeper Compartment" for 2 seniors to Sydney from Melbourne and a return trip home from Sydney to Melbourne on "sleeper accomodation for 2 people"

Overnight or day trip, 2 berths for the overnight run, but there are 3 seats in each sleeping compartment for the daylight service and all three seats get sold if the train sells out.
