For the first time I am arriving in Melbourne with Qantas around 0530 and would like to use the QF lounge in domestic T1 to freshen up etc.

As my baggage will be on the carousel, but the lounge is on the departures side of security, does it mean that I will need to collect my bag, place into a locker, then go through security in order to get to the lounge or is there a lounge accessible from the Qantas check in area ?

I do not usually go to the lounges in Melbourne when I fly, so am unfamiliar with their location, although on the Melbourne airport maps, it looks like the only domestic lounge is airside of security, while the International lounge is closer to the gates.

Domestic Arrivals and Departures are on the same level, so if you do have access (WP only) visit the lounge first before collecting your luggage.

What happens to my luggage if I leave it on the carousel though ? I will have my Qantas tags on the bag, so is it likely that the QF Baggage Services guys will take it off and keep it for me then ?

Sometimes they collect the luggage other times it goes round and round on carousel. I have had them call me asking if I have forgotten luggage. Just tell them had important phone call to deal with and will be around shortly to collect luggage.
