Hi all

A colleague just asked for a hotel recommendation in Melbourne for a UK based person willing to pay $280/night. I immediately thought HSW, Westin and Crown but on reflection with no need to stay at a chain and with that budget - do we have any suggestions of the best place to stay.

Key requirements/info are

- Points earning and status are not important (sacrilege I know but let's roll with it)
- First time visitor to Oz and Melbourne
- Needs to be nice/well appointed
- Close to the relevant things that a tourist would do in Melbourne (I am not aware of what those things are though having only really work visited MEL rather than tourist visited MEL)

Any thoughts/suggestions?

Cheers

Though general indications in that range would be good.

I would recommend the Urban St Kilda, just because the location is fantastic. The CBD and Southbank are great, but to me inner city is kind of same-same. St Kilda is one of those places that makes Melbourne seem wow. Walking distance to amazing restaurants and cafes as well as tourist attractions, plus the tram is right out the front for trips to the CBD.
The hotel has been done up really well and I do enjoy the service.

I would recommend the Tyrian Serviced Apartments in Fitzroy. Great spacious apartments on
Johnston Street, with all the cafes, restaurants, clubs and public transport right at your front
door. Have stayed there myself for the past 2 years (since opening) and you really can't want
for anymore. Fully equiped kitchens, balconies and so much room to spread out. Much better
than hotel room and only $10 cab ride to city if tram is not to his liking.

Obviously prices vary at different times, but I recently booked for a March date at The Langham for $248. Haven't stayed there before, but the Langham in Auckland was awesome, so I'm hoping this one is as good! ;)

Some nice boutique hotels in the south of river area: Olsen, Cullen, Prince, Royce. Royce probably a good compromise between a cool inner city locale and proximity to CBD, located on St Kilda Rd near Toorak Rd. For awesome restaurants, cafes and good bars, can't go wrong with Olsen or Cullen which are right in the middle of the trendy South Yarra (ok I'm biased) or Prahran areas, or Prince in St Kilda albeit it's a lot more touristy.

More conventional options in the CBD - Westin or Grand Hyatt.

Showing my age here :!:

The Langham was the Sheraton Towers in its previous life and was quite nice.

I have not stayed there in recent times though.

+1 for The Langham, even allowing for my VA HHonors Diamond status and all
The only problem is I can't get it to fit into the original budget of $280 :(
Seriously nice hotel, modern outside olde-worlde charm inside and the exec Lounge is great.

Langham Mel is awesome too. Just don't have the breakfast - you may die from glorious over-indulgence!!!

Good luck with a sub-$280 hotel in Melb. I live here, and am disappointed in hotel prices (on the rare occasion I do stay in the city for a night). Even a rubbish hotel on the city fringe is pushing $300. I'd expect a much higher quality hotel for that kind of coin.

I will join with the others suggesting the Langham. It can be done for the price, I am staying in March and managed to get a Club room for $280 p/n through advance purchase.

The Langham is one of the most overrated hotels I have ever stayed in. The room temp was unbearable (three separate times), but probably because the hotel was on a heating cycle as it was winter all three times. Very frustrating though not being able to alter room temp in a 5-star hotel.
Alto on Bourke is nice. It's an eco-hotel too, if you want to support that kind of initiative.

I'll add another vote to the Langham, particulary in regard to breakfast. Makes me hungry just thinking about it. OH found ice-cream (not sure where, as I didnt see it!). Its the first thing we look for now!

I'll also cast a vote for the Sofitel. I stayed in April for two nights and was very happy with the rate I paid (not sure what, but its under the limit in the OP) from its website.

Agree with previous poster re tempertaure control. Not sure whether I was too warm or cold last two nights.

p.s. Ice cream - just to the right as you walk in - next to the chocolate fountain!
