MELBOURNE Airport has quietly raised some car-parking fees by up to 34 per cent, to the fury of travellers. The state's international gateway - which already pockets more than $114 million a year in parking charges - upped prices this week without a high-profile announcement, prompting fierce criticism that it was trying to hide the increases.
The biggest rise is for a one-day stay in the outdoor long-term carpark, which jumps from $29 to $39.
The hourly rate for visitors dropping off or picking up passengers in the short-term or undercover long-term carpark increased from $12 to $14, a 17 per cent hike.
The Herald Sun can also reveal carpark users at the airport paying by credit card will also be hit with a surcharge of up to 2 per cent.

The Vic Gov really needs to do something about public transport to Aust second busiest airport

What's with this credit card surcharge?

First they had it, then they dropped it, now it's back again???

Well extortionate prices are the norm at most Australian airports and parking is a cash cow to be fully exploited.

To use an economics term I doubt if the price is really elastic, i.e. people wont decrease their usage much because of the price increase. Well certainly not enough to cause the airport owners any grief.

It's not like the alternatives are really viable.

As I keep saying in other places...

Airport Parking Melbourne - Busy Beaver Melbourne Airport Parking

I don't work for them or make cash from them, but the service they offer is excellent, and it's cheap. It's around 7km from the airport, but regular shuttles and prompt pickup from the terminals, it's a no-brainer. I also park there when I drop off people and want to stay longer than an hour; It's still cheaper than short term!

Yep any of those off-site car parks are far better and MUCH safer for your car!

I use these guys, they have always been outstanding

Very little difference between Valet parking and Short Term, particularly on 2 & 3 day rates!

A friend of mine parked with United Airport Parking in Melrose Drive, Tullamarine for 1 night. Apparently he was parked for around 12 hours but was charged for 2 days, the explanation given was that their charges are per day and a stay for just a few hours, if it happens to straddle midnight, is interpreted by the charging system as having been parked for 2 days ( a day being defined as any part of a 24 hour period ending at midnight). Not happy !!! He was told that all parking buildings around Melbourne airport use that same charging policy. Seems to me to be at the very least questionably contrary to Fair Trading principles?

Most places as mentioned are per calendar day. 00:00:01 is technically another day.

I do recall the Business parking area in MEL, around 10 years ago, had a "weekend deal" for $50. In after midday Friday, out before 11pm Sunday or something thereabouts. I had a significantly delayed flight back and got in after midnight. Was slugged the full amount. Contacted them and told them the situation with my flight details and they verified the delay, and refunded me.

The place I park does per calendar, but you pay up-front and leave the keys there (you pay for outdoor or undercover parking) and that's that. If you're delayed a few hours it's not a big deal (6 hours once and they didn't say anything). If you're going to be a few extra days, you call and advise and they will charge you when you return (They've got your car afterall!).

No doubt these price rises are probably to make up the lost revenue from the closure of the "Express" Car Park down at Tiger.

As the crow flys, I live 1.5 k's from the terminal - AFF'ers are welcome to park in my front yard gratis ;)

If you cut across the reserve - 30 minutes max. If I'm at home I'm happy to do drop offs and pick ups for a nice bottle of red! :)

Do you accept Cellarmasters red? Shintaro10x and I may become regulars ;)

For such generosity though I would select something from my epiquire selection for a more worthy gift of appreciation :)

Beats me for convenience, I am a 20 minute drive away.

I have friends to collect on Monday from QF94, and then more friends on Tuesday on QF94. I need to co-ordinate my friends. :)

I think I will make sure my windscreen is really clean at BP before they land. ;)
