MEL/SYD Flounge treatments - a guide

It was good one recent day at just before 1400 in MEL. Unfortunately that's slightly after your prospective time. I had no trouble organising it when I walked in.

I've got 6 JQ35 and JQ3s coming up in the next 2 months. What's the treatment availability like before them? Say around 12:30-2:30pm in SYD and 11:30am-1:30pm in MEL?

I had a few JQ35's in the last couple of months and always got spa availability.
I would suggest you to go book as soon as you enter the lounge. They usually have more space around 1.30-2.30pm so you can eat first. The restaurant may be busy at first but as soon as the LA flight starts boarding, you will be able to get a table.

Last 2 JQ3s have been cancelled. Hopefully this is just bad luck and not the new norm.

What's the "protocol" for a tip post spa treatment ?

What's your advice ?

Thanks

I have never tipped in Australia for a Spa treatment - just wouldn't occur to me. I would assume they would be paid decent wages. I did have a lovely conversation with my attendant last time I was in, which ranged from children to Kahlil Gibran - would have been embarrassed at the end of that to have offered money....

I tipped the chauffeurs in my last few J trips - approx 50% of my usual cab fares.

None declined; per contra, they were all thankful for such tips.

That's why I raised the question to gauge your thoughts on the spa treatment.

I accept everyone is different to some degrees, hence the word protocol was italicized "protocol".

Each to their own. :). I do tip overseas and of course in the USA and in restaurants in Aus and a taxi. Many cab drivers don't earn very much. I like the fact that in Australia if someone is nice to you it is because there is a genuine rapport not because they were hoping for a tip. I think it would be a tragedy if we went the American route...I might be totally ignorant and the protocol is to tip at Spas in Aus - I am sure others will contribute .....

I've never tipped at a spa in Australia, whether it be in the F lounge or otherwise - if anything some may find it rude. I've had some cab drivers (both normal and the Statesman-type hire cars) find tips "unnecessary" or even insulting.

Also in restaurants it wasn't that long ago that the "tip" line under "total" was non-existent....

In short, my advice is: there is no protocol for a tip post spa treatment.

MEL/SYD Flounge treatments - ? Spa for invited guest

Has anyone had any issue with booking a spa session for his/her invited guest in lieu of your entitlement ?

No, I am not thinking of double dipping (WP + guest).

I am happy to forgo mine if +1 could have it.

Thanks

Re: MEL/SYD Flounge treatments - ? Spa for invited guest

Does anyone know if the First Lounge will call those travelling in F on QF, but booked through an AAdvantage redemption, prior to departure?

i.e. To book spa treatment etc...

Good question - I'd like to know that myself.

Yes they do - but one should make sure the correct contact details are available in your booking.

If you havn't heard from anyone regaing such by early PM the day before, call the lounge and ask.

I found this on ABT, not sure if it is 100% accurate, as far as invited guest is concerned.

Would appreciate some advice.

BTW, does the spa close at 5pm so that would preclude later flights (ex SYD) ?

".... [h=3]Who can use the Qantas spa?[/h]If you can get into the Qantas First lounge you can get into the spa...."

Of course you "can get to use the spa" ... BUT ...

It must be 1) open, 2) not booked out in the time you have before yon flight.

First PAX have dibs from bookings made the day before.

As far as your guest goes - I'm sure being a First Class PAX you could make a booking when contact is made the day before, then transfer your booking to another on the day.

As a newly minted WP I haven't yet had the pleasure of visiting the Melbourne FLounge. Should do so later this month. The Sydney FLounge has been terrific both times I've been in, however never made the spa. Will see what fortune holds for me in Melbourne.

Re: MEL/SYD Flounge treatments - ? Spa for invited guest

There's nothing preventing both you and your guest using the spa though if the slots are available when you ask.

So, double dipping is allowed - space permitting !

Why is it double dipping? Anyone who is allowed in the lounge is allowed a spa treatment if there is an appointment free. So one gets a booked treatment as an F passenger and one gets an free slot same as for everyone else :).

The only difference being, a First Passenger can book a treatment the day before, virtually guaranteeing one while "anyone else" has to wait until they actually arrive at the lounge. Reports are that often there are non available by then (esp. SYD).
