MEL F Check In

The MEL First class check-in is open most of the day.

It opens around 3:30am for QF25[,closes after qf93, reopens noon] and normally closes around 5:30pm (after QF133 closes) before re-opening 3-4 hours before QF29 is to depart.

I have never had a problem with early arrival into the Mel F lounge, but did have an issue in Sydney. While the lounge was open, QF had not yet commenced check-in for bags for my flight (I was 3.5 hours early after some mtgs finished early).

Seemed strange to me, but I waited for 30 minutes for them to take my bags.

I wish you the best. remember that this does nto indicate howmany pax have applied for a point supgrade which can change the Y capacity a lot on day of departure. Good Luck I hope you get it.

Thanks Tas. I flew this route in J earlier in the year for work and the J cabin was about 25% full. It seems to be a very under utilised route up front. My fare is not upgradeable so will see how it pans out. I've got seat 40G booked so worst case scenario it should be bearable with a nice stop in the Wing F lounge for a shower.

row 40 is nice on the 4 class 744. I aim for 40C or 40A if night flight as I like to lean against window to sleep when I am forced to fly Y which is sometimes.

I've been checking the loads on my flight each day. It got down to Y2 a few days ago but since it has crept back up and now with 10 days to go stands at:

F3 A3 J9 C9 D9 I6 W9 R9 T2 Y9 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 VC SC NC QC OC XC E0

I'm curious if anyone has any theories about the increasing Y inventory.

- Cancellations / changes?
- They were holding Y inventory back?
- They are overselling because premium cabins are light (see QFCSA's comment below in another thread)

Last few days QF29 MEL-HKG has been oversold by over 60 people in Y, and only a hand full would've had point upgrades, so all the others based on status and fare type have the op-up..

The lack of discount Y would seem to indicate yield managements decided to oversell Y with J inventory.

Just tried OLCI and it failed at seat selection with the following error:

We are unable to process your check-in request at this time. Try again later or check in at the airport. [ER100]

Does anyone have an opinion on this re op-up or random technical failure?

The current fare buckets are:

F5 A5 J3 C3 D3 I0 W3 R3 T0 Y4 B4 H4 K4 M4 L4 V4 S4 NC QC OC XC E0

Y has been getting down to 1 in the last few weeks before going back up to as high as 9. J & W classes have been at 9 until the last day or so.

Here is some numbers that might be more closer to the mark. My data suggests that they are only selling 3 in Y, 4 in W, 3 in J and 5 in F. Good luck with any op-up.

From memory, and someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but even when travel agents hold seats for prospective passengers, without deposits, it reflects in these numbers. Given your travel is at the end of August to Europe, it is peak season for tourists (albeit towards the end) and so can fluctuate wildly, especially as holiday-makers start to return to work.

Cheers,

JOBU

Hi Jobu - it's actually tonight's flight.

Thanks Tas for your feedback again. I have been upgraded to PE MEL-LHR so pretty happy with that. I've never flown PE before but a check of seat guru shows all seats are fairly equal?

FYI the currrent buckets are:

F7 A7 P0 J5 C5 D5 I0 U0 W2 R2 T0 Z0 Y0 B0 H0 K0 M0 L0 G0 E0

Thanks to everyone who has given me feedback so far.

I have seen this behaviour many times. (Economy buckets fluctuating up and down with low numbers on a daily basis).

Methinks the flight is sold out in WHY and "Yield Management" are now trying to sell PE/J seats for high WHY fares.

Unless you are on an award booking, your chances as a WP of a operational upgrade would be better than normal.

Thanks Serfty. It allowed me to OLCI this morning and I have a Y+ seat.
That means you have indeed been upgraded.

The seat map shows as a standard 4 Class Kangaroo configuration with PE being rows 34 to 37.

So not only will you get a Y+ seat, you will get Y+ "service".

OK, I asked the question today when using it.

Currently (winter), the MEL first class check-in opens as noted before closing after the last eligible QF93 passenger has checked-in.

It re-opens at noon or shortly after.

Later in the day it closes after the last eligible QF133 PAX has checked in, re-opening at 19:20.

Can Serfty or anyone else advise how this changes with daylight saving (QF029 departing ~1 hour later). Does F check in reopen at 8:20 for this flight?

To answer my own question I dropped in today after arriving at MEL and it's ~ 8:30pm so I guess it just moves back the our during daylight saving with the later departure.

Not sure if there has been a change but I turned up at 6:00 this morning for QF93 and F check in was closed. It opened about 5 minutes later but there were further delays waiting for a porter and for "the flight to open".

Hi guys quick question on this topic.

I have a flight MEL-DFW via Sydney. As a WP am I still able to use the Qantas First Check In to get my SYD and DFW boarding passes even though it is a domestic flight to Sydney in first instance? I know I could do this at the domestic counter but this may be the only chance I get to use the much acclaimed First check in room

Thanks
J
