“New” or “extension/expansion of the the current one”.....

From the Sunshine Coast Council website = Wednesday 15 January 2020

"Sunshine Coast’s new airport runway reached a critical milestone in December with the first layer of asphalt being laid.
In the lead up to the opening of the new runway on May 21, 2020, more than 400,000 tonnes—almost eight times the weight of the Sydney Harbour Bridge—of fine crushed rock and 64,000 tonnes of asphalt will be placed on top of a compacted sand embankment."

Mhm, wasn't that thread meant to be about Brissy's new runway?

I think someone should split the Sunshine Coast airport extension into a separate thread...

Not quite !!

https://www.sunshinecoastairport.com.au/2019/12/03/sunshine-coast-airport-passenger-records-soar/=

3 December 2019
Sunshine Coast Airport saw an all-time record number of passengers for the month of October of around 125,000 people.
This figure is up almost 6,900 passengers from October 2018, a 5.8% increase year on year.

..and could get quite a bit busier if people desperate to have their flying holidays are dissuaded by Scott from marketing and media reports from going further afield.

BTW: Have you got a spare bedroom ;)😂😂😂

Not to drag this any further from the topic, but what is the purpose of MCY handling B787 or A330 aircraft? New diversion points located closer to BNE or do they expect to get routes to North America and Asia?

Would allow increased capacity in peak periods (cough, school holidays, cough).

Clearly BNE have done a better promo of their new runway than MCY. That’s a great improvement for MCY.

The Sunny Coast has a few special things on the go....

Top three.

1. $430M, 15 hectare central business district being built on the old Horton Park golf course

2. Location of Australia's 2nd eastern seaboard underwater data cable - Sydney is the only other site

3. New and extended runway - see above

What is the rationale of ripping up a perfectly good runway which gives them both capacity and an alternative approach path / wind tolerance?

I appreciate the re-alignment may be beneficial with some of the prevailing winds (IIRC).

Apparently it’s a safety issue

But some believe it’s a deliberate move by the SCRC (council) to push the flight path into NSC (Noosa council)

The airport is owned by the SCRC, the new flight paths basically move everything north and over the next door neighbour - Noosa

You have to love the on again, off again, on again relationship/war between SCRC and Noosa!

Correct title is The Hon Scott Morrison MP, Prime Minister (and Member for Cook.)
aka Scotty from marketing.
Or just 🧢.

Who's got time for such formalities, especially when 'The Honourable', can only be correctly used for an increasingly small subset of current MPs.

But back on topic: is there any planned increase in service to MCY with the upgraded runway?

From Sunshine Coast Airport you can fly direct to and from Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Auckland. Air New Zealand provides seasonal direct flights between Auckland <> Sunshine Coast. The 2020 season will commence Sunday 12 April 2020 through to Sunday 25 October 2020.
There are also charter flights for FIFO mine workers.
There is nothing on the website other than =
“The new runway will provide the Sunshine Coast community with a new gateway domestically and globally.
“It should lead to greater choice in airlines, destinations and flight times and the potential to attract over 2,000,000 passengers annually. "

;);)

I shouldn't need to say this, but any more references to Scott Morrison, his title and/or nicknames in this thread will be deemed to be off-topic and the post removed. A warning may also be issued to the member. This thread has been created from the "BNE new runway" thread and is about the "MCY new runway". Let's keep it on topic.
