MCY new runway - updates

Apparently it’s a safety issue

But some believe it’s a deliberate move by the SCRC (council) to push the flight path into NSC (Noosa council)

The airport is owned by the SCRC, the new flight paths basically move everything north and over the next door neighbour - Noosa
Hahhaa firmly in the SCRC, I love this :D

I'd really love a new route north though, either TSV or CNS I guess. Hate driving south to BNE to head back north.

I am sure COVID-19 has dampened international expectations in the short term. Otherwise could have been a good destination for Air Asia X or Scoot.

More than likely the runway will be useful for "domestic" expansion at the most. Seasonal Transcons to PER, etc for example.

Per recent events (COVID-19, etc), international expansion is likely be very minimal (if at all), more likely additional NZ flights. I do agree MCY would've been ideal for AirAsiaX and Scoot had it not been for recent events.

What aircraft can't land on this length? At 2,450m, seems short to be future proofed

Every aircraft can land with that amount of length (under normal operations). The question really becomes a case of how strong the pavement is to handle certain weights. 2450m is the same length as 16L at SYD or RWY 01 at TSV.

Now TSV can obviously take C17s with a MTOW of around 265T, which is slightly heavier than A330s and B787s. Take off shouldn’t be an issue at those weights because the prevailing wind is an easterly, and there would be no obstacles on departure from an easterly heading.

So my guess is that’s probably the biggest you’re going to get there.

Presumably also depends on the width and taxiway widths, but I'm guessing the A380 was never going to be their target market. Diversions might have been useful though?

OMG if AirAsia started doing flights to KUL, I'd totally go back to my uni days of going to KUL for the weekend from OOL!

:D

If Scoot started I’d be much more inclined to pop down to the Sunshine Coast for a Long weekend than go to Bali, coughet or the like!

The Sunny Coast has a few special things on the go....

Top three.

1. $430M, 15 hectare central business district being built on the old Horton Park golf course
.....

2. Location of Australia's 2nd eastern seaboard underwater data cable - Sydney is the only other site

......

3. New and extended runway - see above

Not a bad post, but you missed the most significant change. I have decided to live near Maroochydore for the near future. I am sick of the pre-flight commute to BNE prior to international flights. Due to this issue, and my almost-abstinence from flying recently, the number-crunchers realized that a major revamp of MCY was a solid bet.
