As I have been getting the updates but looked on here to find that is appears it isn't a newsworthy topic, I thought I should share so others who are interested can also indulge - this one will come on stream mid 2020 - well before the Western Sydney airport (another 380 weeks)..

Brisbane's New Runway - Brisbane Airport

The building of the new runway involves many parties working together. This video explores the essential role of Airservices Australia in the construction, including the installation of navigational aids for the new runway.

The project team continues to achieve significant milestones and are on track for Brisbane's new runway to open in mid-2020.
  • Half of the second layer of fine crushed rock for the runway is complete.
  • More than 50,000m3 of taxiway concrete has been installed.
  • 98 per cent of bulk earthworks are complete.

It’s a mercy really. The native birds and mangroves would have died from the jet exhaust.

On a more serious note why does it take so long to do these projects in Australia?

Would it be five years at least since they started?

I believe they need to wait for the soil to settle (by surcharge-loading it with fill) before they can build on top of it. That stuff (settlement) doesn't happen overnight.

EDIT: It looks like they've got a FAQ that answers your question exactly :)

I note Paul Coughlan (in one of the videos) mentions one of the two important aspects of the 1970 plan was that they can develop all of their terminals down the spine (between the two runways) – I for one look forward to hearing who gets a new terminal built for them on the Northern apron. If it was a new domestic terminal, it would mean either Virgin/Tiger or Qantas/Jetstar could have a completely separate terminal. Then again, they could relocate the international terminal closer to the domestic.

It would take even longer if this was in Germany, Berlin let's say :D

But glad it's coming along and I'm not surprised- it always looks very busy (and dusty) over there.

This is exactly right. The ground conditions at the airport fairly closely resemble many metres of 'blancmange' and if you just built on it without preconsolidating the ground, whatever was built would just settle and crack.

The same thing needed to be done either side of the Gateway Motorway for the GUN project that recently opened.

Or book on the first flight to take off?

It will be much busier from here on in. Not looking forward to the chaos with pick up drop off and parking.

MCY new runway will beat the operational date by a few weeks. The new runway will be able to accommodate B787 and A330
