I've noticed that the way the website allows functionality has changed in this area.

Previously (last year September-ish) I was able to view the seat map in the T-48, T-24 hour periods and less and change my seat to preferred seats if I hadn't earlier been able to get into the area blocked for elites. This I could do without actually checking in. As I was waiting for a waitlist to come through I wanted to see which seat Mrs Albatross710 was in without checking her in.

Last week to checkin in Paris visibility of the seat map disappeared about 72 hours before the scheduled departure. Speaking with the KF service centre they also do not have visibility (so they say) of what is happening with seats as control has been passed to the 'local station'.

Just thought I'd see if others have had similar experience with limited website functionality in the final days before departure.

I have had an experience a year or so ago, where I was unable to check-in online and upon calling the KF service centre was also told it had been passed onto the 'local station/airport'. Turns out the ground staff were running through a manual check-in operation exercise for that flight. I ended up losing my pre-selected row 34 seat (3rd row in Y) to be pushed back to about row 49 as I turned up at my usual check-in time (about 1.25hrs prior). In this case, it appeared to be a first come - first serve approach for seat allocation.

I booked flights perth to Singapore return for the mrs and 1 daughter last week. Went into the manage booking and selected preferred seats online but kept coming up with error message saying we can't save at the time, try later or contact SIA call centre. So I rang the call centre, and the lady advised the seats have all been locked and I should try at T-48 when I checkin. I am only velocity gold not SIA FF but when we fly in April I will be WP with velocity so I might have to go back into my booking and remove and then add again my FF number to get the system to recognise the WP.
Is it best to just try my luck then at online checkin time ?
