The destination pairs are the same, so I would have thought that KUL-LAX would come under the # qualification.

How dare Qantas protect it's own business in the middle of an attempted turn around. How dare they offer lower earn rates on a competitive carrier than on their own metal, how dare they structure their frequent flyer program to benefit their airline more so than their competitors. How dare Qantas try to look after its own interests, they should of known well that all Australian customers would prefer to travel on Malaysian and should therefore of afford a earn rate that was better than that on QF, Qantas how dare you… Shame on you. :rolleyes:

No issues with QF protecting their business; it wouldn't be smart strategy to offer the same or better earn rates on routes where they have their own metal. The frustration I am expressing is that there isn't a QF flight to KUL from any Australian airports; they could have offered structured their earn rates to be lower on Australia/Europe routes but not on flights originating or terminating in KUL (and yes, you could book a SYD/KUL/LHR flight as two sectors, but that would typically be more expensive).

Secondly, many OneWorld carriers are somewhat competitive to Qantas to varying degrees - that same logic would suggest that QF should apply lower earn rates to every other OW carrier.

Finally - and perhaps most tenuously - I am loyal QF partly because of their OW membership and the earning potential across a huge range of carriers/destination (KUL being the only significant gap to me that was about to be closed by MH). So this protection of their business also make QF less attractive to me and potentially other travellers...

Anyone know anything about a points redemption table yet? I wanna know how many points one way from Heathrow to KL.

In theory, redemptions will be the same as for other carriers, which is measured by miles. So, KUL-LHR is 6593 miles which puts it in the same band as SIN-LHR. So that should be 42k for Economy, 84k for Business and 126k for First (all one way).

Called QFF earlier today, was told 92000 for KUL-LHR business, and seat available. Called 5 mins later to confirm, but was told they recd an email saying all award bookings on MH are on hold.

I figured 42K as that's what it is (was?) for London to Singapore, and SIN is a stones throw from KL
Though sometimes partner airlines seem to be a little more for some reason. Eg, Syd to HK is 30K with QF but 35K with Cathay

They couldn't tell me when they'd be back on line either..
 
Can anyone confirm how to check the class when booking MH on-line.
My dummy booking states "hlfx1yau" - so I would suspect the "y" in here relates to booking class Y?
No. Booking class would be the "h" at the start.

The "l" likely refers to it as being a "low season" fare.

The "fx" I am unsure about.

The 1y generally refers to be valid for 1 year.

The "au" would imply its an Australian fare.

Thanks - that makes sense. Means you can't book "Y" on MH online, which is not dissimilar to many other airlines. It's frustrating that the earn tables are based on specific fare types that you can't price or book online.

At the risk of going a little off-thread, are there third party web sites that let you book MH (or any other airline) flights in specific fare types? SYD/KUL with full Y status earn would make it a bit more appealing, even with the reduced points earn.

This morning I looked at JASAs from ADL-KUL. Around 580,000 one way. No thanks
 
Oliverd, have you checked how many OW airlines have lower earn rates with the QFF program? CX and BA are two I'm aware of I'm sure others can highlight the others for me.

No, this is clearly QF wanting to ensure it's FF members based in Australia and NZ book on QF or EK metal. On the face of it, it makes sense as a business decision, but as a FF program it decreases its utility to me other than as a domestic program. Star Alliance continues to increase in appeal with these changes.

However, AA hasn't updated their website yet for their MH earn rates... :cool:
 
oh well, time to get to work on finding good value MH Asia J flights and some ~ from 3K to requal...

Clearly not enough research to meet the exacting standards off this forum ;)

I think it comes down to the definition of "earn rate"... I'm more concerned with status credits; points are secondary. With BA just about every economy fare will give me discount economy status credits and if I manage to fly in J, any discount business fates will earn J SCs (at least I've never had an issue, although some of then points earned have been at a very low rate). With MH there's more restrictions about what fares are eligible for SCs, especially on the cheaper economy fares.

MH enrich earn table has similar restrictions for QF flights (ie. two tables, one for New Zealand / Australia / Singapore / UK / Europe, with lower earn rates eg. J @ 75%, full Y down to V @ 25%!, and a different table for the rest of the world J @125%, full Y @ 100%).

It seems that those who want to use both QF and MH frequently will have to choose a different one world program altogether.

Indeed, I had been hoping to flick my MH travel to QFF (or vice versa), but looks like I will be better off sending it all somewhere else.

(To me points do matter, not just SC :) )
 
I'm making a prediction that the BA earn table will take a hit as at 1 April 2013 also, but let's wait and see.

I think the odds of the Discount Economy BA flights which still earn 1 QFF per mile dropping to 0.25 are almost 1:1...

I've got discount J fares to Europe on BA booked in mid April.. hope they don't apply a lower SC earn rate to existing bookings...
 
It never ceases to amaze me how complex getting on a plane and staying loyal has become.
I used to be a loyal dog to QF until it demanded my loyalty. So glad they made me open my eyes.
