Malaysia Airlines uses the Qantas Club at Brisbane Airport

Monday, September 11, 2006

Effective 11 September, 2006, Malaysia Airlines will be providing Lounge access to The Qantas Club for our First and Business Class passengers and eligible Enrich passengers. This will assist in providing a bigger space, additional facilities and a more convenient location for our loyal passengers.

A bit of news for those travelling on MH ex BNE.

Which lounge were MH using before? It does mean that the BNE Flounge has another flight worth making it stay around assuming MH 1st passengers get to Flounge

The MH 777-200 service BNE-KUL is sold and operated as 2-class only. So they don't offer a first class service and hence will not have any first class passengers. Perhaps they extend FLounge benefits to their top tier Enrich members?

I was wondering what lounge they previously used too. Maybe SQ?

Anyway, it is an interesting development. With MH's new partnership with DJ, it is now possible for pax to fly MH out of BNE and use the QP while crediting points to Velocity.

Ahh, I was tricked by their comment "Effective 11 September, 2006, Malaysia Airlines will be providing Lounge access to The Qantas Club for our First and Business Class passengers " into thinking that they had 1st class passengers on the route :)

Perhaps the MH marketing folks should check their service offerings before releasing their spiel to the press  .

Malaysia Airlines has had a "Golden Lounge" at Brisbane for quite some time now. It's located on Level 2, in between the SQ and EK lounges.

I'd expect the move to using the QF facilities is due to MH recently increasing BNE services to 6x weekly.

MH has sent their 3-class 772s in the past (well when they were configured with F class). Now they're configured J (Golden Club) and Y only.

I wouldn't be surprised if we see a new MH lounge located somewhere within the new extension (currently underway) at Brisbane International. I know EK plan to construct a lounge in this area too, right near one of the A380 gates - go figure

How are MAS going these days anyway?

There was a lot of talk about their poor performance last couple of years and all I seem to hear is now is about services cut back recently but they are losing less money - so the increased services mentioned above is a change.

Its a bit funny that a potentially loyal DJ customer will end relaxing in the Qantas club as well (if their interlining agreement drives traffic) - wonder what DJ thinks of this :D

EK's current lounge location is nowhere near the gates they use.

That is not at all uncommon. For example in PER, NZ uses the QP (same in CNS). In AKL a lot of competitors to NZ use the NZ lounge - MH, BI, AR, etc.

They hired a new CEO (Idirs Jala, from Shell) in December last year. He has cut many unprofitable routes, handing them over to Air Asia and downsizing the MH fleet, and making new alliances such as the one with DJ. Still early days but the signs look positive.
