Make an offer to upgrade on your flight to Sydney. How many emails is enough?

I recently updated my Qantas marketing preferences. I'm surprised that for a return BNE-SYD that I would receive 9 emails over 7 days.

Regardless of how many offers the minimum bid of $120 still doesn't get me for a < one hour flight.

I guess I'll get at least another one to make an even number.

They must have started using the Jetstar email offer system.
I searched and eventually booked a return flight with Jetstar. Since booking I've been spammed at least once a week with an email to say
"We see you recently search X to Y, there is still time to convert your search into a booking"

I'm just wondering when they're going to see that I have already booked.

Pretty standard but agree too much. I fly at peak times so rare to get any but got quite a few this year already.

On a SYD-MEL this week it looked like I could drag it down to $85 as a minimum bid. I wouldnt personally as it provides no extra value.

What's the lowest anyone has ever been accepted for?

flew NAN/LAX on a brand new A359 last month. They told us it had been flying commercially for only 10 days.

Anyway, got an email everyday asking if wanted to bid on upgrade. Unlike many airlines, you can bid from any economy fare to business class. The business class on the A359 must be the best around.

So I got an $800 return ticket OZ to LAX & upgraded the NAN/LAX for $1200 & all in school holidays. Did look at flying business class all the way, but was outside my budget. By upgrading NAN/LAX was also able to use the relatively new NAN lounge.

Next time, I might try & upgrade on both long hauls.

Would I stop airline from emailing me ? No way. Easy to delete emails.

The upgrading by bids is apparently so popular, they are increasing the min bids. 12 montha earlier on the A330 with good business class, but not as good as A359, the min bid was AU$865 for NAN/LAX sector

"Are you still interested in an upgrade to BNE?" I was never interested in the first place.

@albatross710 mentioned minimum bid is $120. Way too much. And when did points cost for upgrade from discount economy increase to 10,900 QFF points?

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

QF track email opens/click throughs. If you click the link in the email to see how much the min bid is, they'll almost definitely send you a follow-up.

I don't click on these emails. They usually get deleted. My setting is no read receipts either and I hope my email provider honours that unless there are other measures used to track clicks on emails.

unless there are other measures used to track clicks on emails.

Tracking pixels give senders the ability to check whether you've read an email without any option to send a read receipt. Clicks also are tracked via unique URLs.

Some mail-out products (Litmus as an example, no doubt others too) can even measure dwell time i.e. how long you had the email open.

Off topic but thanks for that information. I see all of this as a gross invasion of privacy. Need to find a way of reading emails so no information is passed back to sender.

sbor90 I always thought that the google mail option to not load images would defeat pixel tracking. Is there a way to defeat pixel tracking?

I do admit to clicking through, so it's understandable to be tracked in that case, assuming I consented to those cookies somewhere.

On the subject of Privacy, I have found that Skyscanner has a comprehensible disclosure which I use for reference to explain to people what goes on under the browser hood.

The section Cookie policy includes a good explanation of all of the type of cookies they are using and why

Yep, you can stop some pixel tracking by disabling the display of external images. You can also look at using extensions like Ghostery, which stops traffic to many known analytics platforms. This may hamper any efforts to trigger a bonus SC offer though :)

AFAIK there's no way to defeat click tracking through unique URLs which allows you to still access the site - unless you can modify the URL in a way which removes your unique identifer.

I would rather have 10 emails for one flight as long as I didn’t get zero emails when you really want a chance to upgrade.

True. We all have different preferences. Some are not as bothered by spam as others. But where do you draw the line about marketing for a single trip? 20? 185? Two million?

On a related note, it seems impossible to unsubscribe from QF Golf emails, at least without unsubscribing to other did I may still want to receive.

but not talking about spam & all airlines especially high cost Qantas are finding it very difficult to sell to leisure travellers.

Am sure all airline marketing people work off the theory/fact that the more emails you send the more response/sales you get & there's no such thing as too many. Realistically, I don't even want to receive more than 1 email a week from an airline, UNLESS they have some insane sales, eg. $600 to USA return to $800 to EU/UK return. Catch is these types of sales are common places this days & will get more & more prevalent.

Business class fares for leisure travellers, not for business types who make short trips. are plummeting as more & more try to upgrade from a lower class.

The last thing any airline wants, is to give a business traveller, who often doesn't pay for their flights themselves, cheaper tickets, so guess will see more companion type fares.

Just this am, got email from air nz, saying fares to Queenstown NZ are cheaper the more in your group (in the one booking), although it can be almost impossible to get a group of people to pay up, in less than 48 hours. (most air NZ sales last exactly 48 hours, which is realistically 1 day from time people see it, until they have time to tell others & react. Not sure why their sales are for such short periods. Have organised many groups over the years & some people can't make fast decisions & some can't make a decision at all in a short period ie. 24 hours.
