I'd recommend using your comp upgrades on the A330 transcon product! It is really excellent!

I went Hilton when I hit plat, and have not regretted it! It was super valuable in the USA, got plenty of upgrades on dirt cheap rates

I went Hilton for Plat as I'd taken IHG with Gold and only used it once.

I took Europcar with Plat as I'd taken Hertz with Gold and never got upgraded, never got contacted and when I queried it never got a reply.

How quickly do Hertz, Hilton, etc. take to comp? I'm going to the US in August and, if my maths is right, I should hit WP when I step off the flight in LAX. I was, however, thinking of throwing my Gold comps at Europcar and IHG so I get plat level comp'ed with HHonors and #1. Not sure if this is going to be practical, a good idea or even possible.

Went with Hilton and Europcar.

My fave Plat perk is row 3 - pretty much always get 3A with decent legroom

Hilton Diamond perk has certainly paid off for me. Some great room upgrades and executive club access on each stay.
Europe car required plenty of patience and follow up to benefit from Privilege Elite perks. After three car hire contracts, no upgrades or discounts , emails to Customer Relations team I am finally a Privilege Elite card holder. As a gesture of goodwill Europcar kindly offered bonus vigin velocity points to make up for loss of benefits to date. I have yet to receive them.

How quickly do Hertz, Hilton, etc. take to comp? I'm going to the US in August and, if my maths is right, I should hit WP when I step off the flight in LAX. You may be lucky, and get it quickly, but I had to wait significantly longer than the however many days Velocity indicated - despite follow up Velocity had not informed Hilton on time (I called Hilton who confirmed they had not received notification yet) and I missed out on an upgrade for 4 night stay in Hilton Hanoi... on the other hand, one of my colleagues applied considerably later and was comped straightaway (and did get the upgrade!).

I chose Hilton and Europcar - received an upgraded car every single time, so quite happy; some unavoidable issues that came up with were dealt with immediately and well.

And yes, love the 3A or 3 B seat! And the seat on a QF flight when the last (and only direct) DJ flight back to ADL was cancelled....

Has anyone had any experience getting complimentary baggage added/adjusted on pre-sabre bookings? Was Silver when I booked a trans Tasman flight - VA ticket (fare basis QZDA) NZ metal outbound, VA metal inbound.
In the old system it showed up as having a bag included, but Sabre doesn't seem to have that data.

Also not really sure which of the new buckets my fare falls into (i.e. Saver, Saver Lite etc) for the "number of bags".

I guess it's worth a call to find out unless anyone has had any experience with this one directly

Made Platinum on the 13th April. Unfortunately, my last flight posted after my review, but an email to Platinum Velocity fixed the status credits that disappeared into the "black hole" and are now posted correctly (or I should say, an additional 20 SC's were posted to my account to reflect that I am now 780 SC's to maintain my status).

Baggage allowances are sorted out at checkin so you will get your platinum allowace of 3 bags (assuming you booked a saver fare pre-sabre).

So NZ metal on a VA tix gets plat baggage same as VA metal would, but NZ metal on a NZ tix gets no plat baggage???

Correct.

The trans-tasmain alliance is setup such that you get your all your velocity status 'perks' when you book through VA and on a VA flight number (but may be on NZ metal).

If you book through AirNZ, on a AirNZ flight number, you will get some of your 'perks', such as priority checkin and lounge access, but no special baggage allowance.
