Made any travel mistakes lately?

Trip through Europe back in 2012 - my ex and I were flying from Istanbul to Podgorica in Montenegro, so that we could drive to Kotor. Flying some horrific airline - Air Serbia or something, arrived at Ataturk Airport (IST) and saw that flight, but it was with Turkish Airlines (same time, destination etc). Went to the check-in counter and she looked at me blankly saying they had no reservation for us. I gave her my details again but she kept declining.

I finally called the Airline, who advised me that 'Oh yes, we stopped flying out of IST 2 weeks ago, we now fly out of the other Istanbul airport Sabihia (SAW)' on the Asian side of Istanbul (about 1.2 hours drive). Same time, same location, but on the other side of the city - I asked why they didn't bother telling us - they said 'oh it was big news, we assumed people would know..'

Needless to say they are broke now...

I think clapping the last pax is just rude and uncalled for. Somebody always has to be last and how do know the circumstances that led them to be last?

I'm pretty sure this only applies in certain circumstances.... the 'we're waiting for passengers who checked in but have gone missing between the check-in counter and the aircraft'. The ones that have gone to the bar. Or gone shopping. Not the elderly who may have waited for a wheelchair. Or a mother with an infant.

Late booking to ZQN from SYD for Christmas. Decision was made earlier in the day and the booking made later in the day... after a bottle of red. When I awoke the next morning I was paranoid I'd gotten the dates, destination, flights or something wrong - the details turned out to be all good. And then I saw the price - I'd booked fully flexible J class tix - ouch!

We were last to board a VA flight to Fiji a few years ago.

We were in the NZ lounge and I kept asking and they kept assuring us that it was all OK until someone from the gate came and got us. Then it was a mad scurry to the not so near gate. No walk of shame fortunately as we were in row 1 and everyone else looked on in amazement at these late people being escorted onto the a/c.

A flight to Canberra was held for me in Melbourne a couple of years ago, it was late on a Friday, my flight out of Devonport was delayed due to mechanical isues and I was told I'd be put up in a hotel in Melbourne overnight as this was the last flight into Canberra. When I asked in the lounge what happens next, a call was made to the gate and of course it was the farthest one away.... right down the end. I was told if I was quick I would make the flight.
Anyway after running and being unfit didn't help, I was given 4F and a bottle of water, person in 4D wasn't happy, mind you he had just come from Darwin and wanted to get home to Canberra, then a few extras boarded after me, so I wasn't alone in being late. Fortunately no-one clapped any of us.

A few years ago on a QF flight out of Singapore, the Captain said over the PA that would be a slight delay due to the last passenger to board having an issue with not being able to take her full water bottle through sexurity. When she finally appeared, I'm surprised people didn't clap her.

What did she want to do with that bottle??? :p

Here I was thinking the politically correct term for sexurity was condom! I'll leave the blatantly obvious quip about the clap, well alone!

I wonder Cossie, if your post falls into the category of "made any travel (forum) mistakes lately" :D

I suspect that I will be drummed out of AFF for this the most obvious and basic mistake ( or perhaps I should quietly sneak off to a far corner of the parade ground with a .45 and end my misery )

Here goes, and I only admit this because I have been told that confession is good for the soul!
Researching fares for our annual European ski trip and using all the tools
learnt on AFF I found flights on SQ.
The price for these fares was around what the Chinese charge with several
stops and many hours longer.
Being smart I thought I will wait - surely SQ will get cheaper. Of course the result is obvious - as I watched the
price went up !, $800 per pax, and yes
paid fares not points.
Please forgive me and maybe my depression will go away, remember that
I am old and tired !!!

A sad and sorry tale of woe....

Whilst the thought of picking the peak or trough is enticing - "A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush."

Sometimes you just have to be satisfied with a great deal and give up the search for the all-time-never-to-be-beaten price.

With airlines and travel sites putting cookies on your machine - the house has everything stacked in its favour and NOT yours.

... and what are the lotto numbers for Monday?

TOF I have bought each of us a ticket too just to maintain WP status 3 years running. It is quite a novel experience that I hope it
won’t get me thinking I could do that a bit more. Mrscove would just buy tickets if I put my head into a pizza and it becomes her task to swan around like a Saudi princess. Naturally I haven’t suggested she ever join AFF so our OCD activities are quite safe I am thinking.

Damn straight Buzzard. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve had to run through airports to make a connection due to delayed inbound flights (not surprisingly, IAH features significantly in my athletic transfers...). If someone clapped at me on boarding in that case, there would be a high probability of an F bomb being the retort and as a confident public speaker I’m quite able to shape the way I say things to maximise effect.

Usually I’m a nice guy...

geez. And people complain about deteriorating manners and behaviour. Retorting bad manners with the same doesn't set any examples.

Spot on Cove - very perceptive.
I think my wife is like yours " Just book it, pay or points along it is SIA "

Yep, in my case I was the dumb passenger sitting at the gate during boarding time even though the gate had an aircraft from a different airline.

In my defence I wasn't the only one!

Oh crumbs. You'd think I'd know better by now. Have been caught out before by the 'minute past midnight' departures out of UAE countries and this time it went awry. Have now booked us for an overnighter in Doha. Ah well, never been there before.....

Things to do in Doha please? :(

When there is a wait for pax from a connecting flight in the USA it is usually announced.I have heard that call many times and at others have been the delayed pax.Never any clapping.

The Museum of Islamic Art is worth a look, as is the Souq Waqif.

What I did to kill a half day was to hire a (aircon!!!) car and driver and they just took me around, stopping where I wanted and waited for me.

Are you flying Qatar? Great airline, but beware their 'overnight hotel' deals, or rather the Oryx Rotana. It used to be handy to the old terminal, but now is not convenient and service is a shocker.
